Why do some ancient art forms become a vibrant part of the modern imagination rather than merely a historical footnote? Indian miniature painting originated in the manuscript traditions of the Mughal, Rajput, and other North Indian dynasties, and has a history spanning over a thousand years. Remarkably, this artform continues to thrive in Rajasthan, with artistic communities dedicated to preserving this sacred art form. In this video, renowned Rajasthani miniature painters Virendra Bannu and Kailash Chand Sharma welcome us into their studios to teach us about the historical context of miniature paintings in India as well as how they guide their apprentices in mastering this ancient art form. We also hear from other young artists and patrons who are passionate about preserving this ancient tradition. We hope you come away with a new appreciation for the process of mastering ancient art forms and the critical role they play preserving the cultural heritage of communities.
