Here in my neighbourhood in a small town in South Africa, we used to have beautiful indigenous birds everywhere. That's until the Mynas moved in. Now they are the ONLY birds around. I've seen them kicking out indigenous birds from their nests, forming groups and attacking any migrating indigenous birds. They now completely dominate our area. I am a keen bird watcher (amateur) and professional environmental scientist by profession. Thanks to the Canberra Myna Action Group (and their trap plans), I have carefully built a trap to South African standards (just finished today). I will tie in some water and food tomorrow and then put it out to see if it works here... For record sake, I will record each one caught and euthanised (with details). I will submit the plans to our local authorities for approval - if successful. We are not allowed to fire any weapon (even air rifles) in residential areas. So I've been frustrated out of my mind on how to control these pests. Now that my trap is complete, I can't wait to see how well it works. A big thanks to the Canberra Myna Action Group! Aussies care about these type of things... I wish more people here would take this kind of initiative.

@@wingsofsuspensionlifts6814 PCP air rifles at 12J does the job nicely. IN SA it is not legal everywhere. We are not allowed to use them in built up areas. But if you find an open area, and you have the land owners permission, you can go to town on them. Plant a few decoys, and and have some myna sounds play on repeat. Leave the fallen where they are. Drawning is a quick way, and good, as - you don't have to be there, once you put it in the bucket of water and cover the top with a glass, or similar cover...you can than turn away, and go for coffee, without feeling any guilt: it's a Vermin, and that is a Vermin destiny, no matter you kill it, or me, or someone else...just cover and do NOT look the further process of drawning...They are best to dispose by throwing into water of your local creek, for their being to properly reset, and body to decompose safely for the community. don't feed to a Cat, or so, it ads you a bad karma, but to kill Vermin as described. or some quicker way: adds you a good karma (and - there is no middle ground, it's a war, they are costing our dollar strength, by a few billion $ per year in various damages) Do not be fooled by small and cute looks :)

The problem is actually is not in mynas, some native birds just can't live well in human-transformed habitat of Australia. Mynas, pigeons, sparrows and some well-adaptable native birds like lorikeets, noisy miners, red wattebirds, "magpies" can, and they even become there more common. Mynas just can live in areas, thare most native birds can't, but this is not their guilt.

I never stated that actually. ALso what I am trying to say is that someone should probably come up with a better way to control the population of this species, not just by picking them off one by one and running them in carbon dioxide for 3 minutes in an air tight container/bag. It just seems very unfair. And I have seen spotted doves, noisy miners, rock doves and suplhur crested cockatoos getting along just fine with Indian mynas in my backyard. They don't mind eachothers company while feeding.

This is complete nonsense, as the Common Myna is only found in parts of far-eastern Australia, so (most Australians would class the Fox as the most hated feral species and second place would be the Cane Toad). The part where they say how they caused the eviction of Kookaburras is a complete joke, as Kookaburras are very agressive and woud have no trouble killing the Mynas. Finally, if one was to do the most recent research, they would find that it's the native Noisy Miner @0:32 that'a causing all the damage to other native birds, and ironically it was Canberra where the research took place.
What happens to the Indian Mynas that people see? They are shot or killed or tortured in inhumane manners. Indian mynas attacking other birds. People attack other people quite often aswell and don't get killed for it. All I am trying to say that is Indian mynas should be given a fair go and it isn't their fault that they were introduced. Australia is a hypocrite in itself and if they think Indian mynas are overpopulating, then check the growth of Australia's popultaion and that of the worlds (^)

What happens to Indian Mynas with diseases? They get inhumanely trapped and killed. Indian Mynas were brought in from overseas and have poulated here. Mynahs have unique abilities, they are smart, have speaking abilities, they are among best worldwide accepted pets, have warm heart to communicate like dogs and read the mind so amazingly, they get attached to their owners, *highly adaptive to human life, *great friends for children, lonely women, lonely men and lonely old men and women, so active, energetic, cute and curious and so much more. Please stop killing them for pest control they are Nature's gifts to us! If you have a problem on universe maybe you can find "Thousand Ways" to deal with it. But most of the time the first and easiest way is not the best one to repeat all the time. An idea is, when they are pests for an area 'we use their special, positive, useful abilities for our lives'. Older Mynahs can easily catched at great numbers via special cages and stored in an wide special area to transfered to jungles, cities or countries who their ecology really needs this bird family or lacks the bird amount, or islands with few animals or birds to get rich. Young babies can collected from nests(hard) or produced in that special place to use for 'old men and women home', imagine everyone has one to enjoy the life, the better life quality, or other children or specially lonely people at economic price and a bit public advertising and speaking words contest to increase demand or to export with high quality mark, so making new jobs and money for the area. Please do everything you can, every creative possible *ideas to save their beautiful souls.

There are people who attack children, people who kidnap children and at the very least, they get charged and have to go through a trialing period but no, they don't get executed for that. One person looks at an Indian Myna and goes "holy crap, its going to poo on my backyard, better kill it". Of course they are pests by intelligence. How do you think they will compete with native birds? I had 2 cherry tree and a couple other fruit trees and a persimmon in my small backyard. Each year their fruits were punched in by Mynas beaks and left to rot before they were fully ripe. And by the time the fruit were ripe, hardly any left. Rotten fruits were then finished by European Wasps, so many that these soon built nests in any nooks and crannies found in the vicinity, even in neighbours' properties. First I decided to try a tedious work of placing nets over the trees, but the Mynas are clever, they are able to find little opening under the trees to get in. And the problem was not resolved unless those openings were closed. Not happy with leaving the fruit alone, the Mynas climbed on the nets and attack the fruit closer to the nets. And the Wasp then would feast on the damaged fruit. Since I had no knowledge on how to eradicate these pests, nor could end the Wasp invasion each summer, I had decided to chop all trees and turning my once lovely green backyard into a dried out patch of sun baked and weedy dirt. Before the Mynas got to know about the fruit trees, there was hardly any of these birds around 15 years ago. Now they are everywhere and moving with the urban housing explosion. Even my 4 friendly Magpies are helping me out by bomb diving on Mynas. Today, I see only a few around my area. But, wait till I replant new Cherry trees, then watch the nightmare start again. I dare not plant any. In the park in front on my home, Mynas and Noisy Miners are constantly fighting over nests and foods. So, Mynas are an introduced pests and should be eradicated. A more serious pest is the house cat. Not necessarily a cat's fault but their owners let them out at night, with hundreds of cats every 5 kilometres, an indication of a human irresponsibility on owning a cat, causing a plague. In my property cats pass by, tripping security lights, video alarm, urinate everywhere, even the front door, car wheels, plants, etc., sending off a pungent smell. Yet, the problem is still the same with irresponsible owners letting them out at night. Most cats have collars.
