Nicely explained but describing Purusha as energy is misleading. From my understanding Purusha is the eternal witness of Prakriti or matter and is the opposite of matter. Purusha is more non-matter. Energy is more Prakriti than Purusha, just as mind is matter, so is energy. Therefore energy can’t be Purusha. Purusha is the space and the seer or witness of all things manifested such as Prakriti, energy and mind.

I have heard your explanation as well as his in a variety of ways so I would consider the words you use here "from my understanding". An the attempt of the ego to describe something that is universal and undescribable. Words are imperfectly perfect. It's why the sanskrit language is so interesting. It allows for this imperfection if we can sit in the seat of the witness. Purusha goes wow, the ego tries to describe the wow from its perspective.

Good, you made it easy to understand manner. However, Sankhya is intuitive knowledge; it's about once experience-based knowledge. It's not a textbook type of philosophy. One minor observation is that prakrity is dynamic energy; Purusha is static. Prakrity goes to Purush. Not the other way around. Your example of sperm and egg is confusing you. That example unnecessarily flips the core thought. Ask your master by whom you learned will guide you better.

Interesting observations!.... Appreciate the person in the video, who is trying to interpret the ancient wisdom in terms of a western and modern scientific view point. But sorry to disagree with the definition of "Purusha" and "Prakriti". "Purusha" is the the universal witness / universal observer consciousness without any attachments or attributes (not energy). And "Prakriti" is the universal and primordial energy/ mater that is non conscious. We don't need to align with modern science to understand an ancient philosophy, specially Indian and eastern philosophies. As the modern western science is just another, but very effective system for making sense of the reality and the universe. It relies on mathematics, reasoning and experimentation based on our senses organs and the instruments we have. But we need to acknowledge its limitation also, like any other system. Even though science can ideally give a universal and unbiased view of the reality, it can only analyze just a tiny fraction of the electromagnetic spectrum, a tiny fraction of the observable matter/ energy , from a tiny fraction of observable universe, that also within a tiny fraction of time we existed in the long life-span of the universe. Classical western science is not telling the point of view of an individual observer experiencing the universe (or rather removes the individual observer experiencing the reality from the whole equation). Indian philosophers were analyzing the whole existence in the point of view of an observer experiencing this creation and the universe. That is why, many ancient indian philosophers were agnostic in interpreting the reality. They were mostly sure that the individual observer exists from their own personal experience. But were agnostic, theistic or atheistic (dismissive) about a universal entity that observe them back. And we can see all types of (theistic atheistic and agnostic) interpretation of Indian philosophies including that of the Samkhya philosophy, the way each philosophers experienced and interpreted the reality.

Is Sattva a part of Purusha or Prakriti? If it is of Prakriti, how will it get processed? If Atma or consciousness is required to process and if Atma is energy as you said in the video, where does consciousness come from?

I don't think removing the Ego is the answer, our individuality is what makes life creative and varied. This is essential to life's diversity. We can still incorporate universal consciousness though

Your understanding of Samkhya is completely wrong! There is no “merging” in Samkhya. Prakriti withdraws as manas, buddhi, and ego. Purusha is like the unchanging aware space without content. It’s the only tattva which is conscious. All prakriti is unconscious. Prof. Gerald Larson summarizes Samkhya Metaphysics “In our interpretation of classical Samkhya we have focused attention on the fundamental dualism between individual consciousness (purusa) (rigpa) on the one hand, and the mass of undifferentiated existence (prakrti), on the other, and stressed the importance of the fact of consciousness in the emergent manifest world (vyakta), and we have emphasized the dialectic or which takes place when purusa comes into proximity to prakrti (all mental and physical phenomena). Our interpretation has attempted to show that classical Samkhya is a system of thought which seeks to understand the world and man's place in from the perspective of this “fact of consciousness” (rigpa). This fact is the reason there is a manifest world, although in itself purusa adds nothing to the world. The purusa (rigpa) only witnesses the world, but since its nature is to witness, it uses the world as an instrument for its own purposes and ends. In classical Samkhya the world is not derived from consciousness, consciousness is not derived from the world. There is a fundamental dualism at the very heart of reality, and this dualism or split is the fundamental existence. The classical Samkhya refuses to understand the world as a product of consciousness. It refuses to see the world as an illusory vision of consciousness, and thus it rejects any idealistic monism. Similarly, its wrong to see consciousness simply as a product of the world, and thus a kind of materialism or naturalism. Thus, it steers an intermediate path between the Indian notion of a conscious, cosmic Self or as one which is the ground of all being, on the one hand, and the notion of a self which is only an empirical, relative construction, on the other hand. It maintains, rather, a fundamental dualism, the opposite poles of which function a kind of dialectical interaction. The ultimate ground or foundation of man in classical Samkhya is of consciousness, but this consciousness is not man's intellect or mind’s awareness, or emotions, etc. It is, rather, the pure, translucent witness is at once the source of man's freedom and his suffering. This fact of consciousness makes man what he is. It is the radical foundation of his existence. The purpose of the classical Samkhya analysis is to grasp or comprehend the ultimate, translucent consciousness in order to overcome suffering and that condition of freedom and isolation which is consciousness in itself. Because the purusa or the ultimate ground of man's existence is only a witness, however, it can only be grasped or comprehended in terms of what it witnesses. Thus, the classical Samkhya attempts to analyze and comprehend what consciousness sees or witnesses in order ultimately to comprehend and discover that which witnesses. In other words, it describes everything that appears to consciousness for the purpose of eventually penetrating to consciousness (rigpa) itself. Ultimately, everything that appears to consciousness is eliminated or expelled (as not being self). The purusa in itself is apart from all strivings, all self-centered awareness, all discursive thought, etc. In itself the purusa is a kind of translucent emptiness, a pure witness. Thus, the classical Samkhya might be described as a kind of "logos" of that which appears to consciousness. The purpose of the analysis or study of that which appears is to reach or penetrate to that for which and by means of which everything appears. The purpose of the analysis is purusartha-i.e., "for the sake of the purusa." By coming to know what purusa is not, one then has access to what purusa is. When one has access to what purusa (rigpa) is, one then has access to the intuitive discrimination (Viveka) that purusa is radically distinct from everything that appears. When one has access to this intuitive discrimination, one then has access to the ultimate ground of human existence, which, according to classical Samkhya, is purusa (rigpa) itself. One then has reversed the normal tendency of human existence in the world, and one has attained the condition of "isolation" or "aloneness" or "solitariness" (kaivalya). One dwells in pure, translucent consciousness, but this consciousness is radically emptied of all content (as false identifications). It is, thus, a kind of pure, translucent emptiness which transcends everything in the manifest and unmanifest world.”
