When the CJI is acting as the President of India then the senior most judge of the Supreme Court usually acts as the CJI of India till the time the CJI is acting as the president. This is the conventional practice in India. For example, Justice Mohammad Hidayatullah, as the CJI, discharged the duties of the President in 1969, during which the next senior-most judge acted as the CJI.
