I know of a couple in the extended faimly where the girl was in 10 grade and the boy had just 18 and was going to go to Canada to Study . So the parents of both side got the couple engaged and that engagement stay for 7 years. One of the reason for the boy's family to hurry up and ask for engagement was that there was a strong possibility that some other family relative wanted the girl for their daughter in law. The other was thst it would keep their son from experimenting with dating etc with white girls. Third reason was to keep the girl in the extended clan of her father's family guy. They are not first or second cousins but may be farther related. They got married in 2004 ., when the boy was about 27 and the girl was about 23 or 24 yrs old. The girl finished her 10th grade and went to college and graduated before getting married and going off to Canada with her husband. I was at their wedding. They are doing great and are like friends with each other. It worked out for them. These days ,only in the villages are there any 14 ,15 year old girls are getting married and leaving their homes to go to the inlaws house. There could be possibilities of some paper Nikkha's of young girls of 16 and above who do the paper nkkkha but do not do the Rukhsati or going away to inlaws houze for 2 to 3 years. If you look at the laws in different states of Pakistan then Punjab has age 16 marriage allowed for girl and 18 for boy. In Sindh the marriage age for girl is 18 and i think boy is also 18. These are court approved marriages with lisecense. In the villages ,the families get their kids married early but do not register marriage until the girl reaches age 16.
