Yeh seb se pehli Umrao Jaan Ada movie thi. Umrao Jaan Ada is a very famous urdu novel written by Mirza Hadi Ruswa based on a tawaif character. The first movie was released in 1972 I think, in Pakistan starring rani. Then the Indian version starring rekha in i belive 81. A series version released in Pakistan in 2003. Then the one starring aishwarya rai in 2006 and now there is one that is in the works which going to star Sajal Ali which I believe will be on Netflix. Inshallah hoping it all works out

Thogh this movie’s central idea is taken from Mirza Hadi ruswas novel.The screenplay is diffrent as claimed by writer Agha Hassan imtisal and director Hassan Tariq. Some critic also claim this film is inspiration from Indian movie “ pakezel”.

MY OBSERVATIONS. Hassan Tariq na tu story he change kar dee, 200 saal purany mahol key movie k malboosaat, bolnay ka tareeqa, set design, kapray, Music instruments aur songs, koi bhe cheez uss zamany sa mutabiqat nahe rakhtee ju iss novel umrao jan ka taqaza tha. As a commercial movie not bad. Songs achay thay... As an art movie yeh Indian Umrao Jan k aagay ZERO hy.. Ma tareef o Tanqeed mulk sa jhoote mohabbat key ainak pehan kar nahe karta...

@@Fareed63 yes obviously the Indian one is better because 1 they have better choreoghers and are more educated on classical dance forms in comparison to Pakistan as it is a Muslim country and also Zia-Ul-Haq had forbidden art forms such as kathak etc, despite that there are still very notable people who kept the art of raqs alive however in today's society they get less opportunity. Another reason is because of budget. India is a lot bigger and a lot more populated than Pakistan and the bollywood industry in general has a big budget. Despite having a small budget and having to start from scratch after partition lollywood still managed to make a name for itself. I think it's amazing whst lollywood has achieved and how far it has gone despite the low budget.

Baat yeh Hy k acting karnay ma budget nahe lagta, costumes ko research kar k banay ma wohe pysa lagy ga ju ab laga tha, music instruments ko bhe sooch samajh kar use karty takeh maloom hota k 1800 era KY Hy. Sub sa bari baat, k story change ka Haq kis na dya jab apni marzee Karne thee tu Nam yeh na rakhty... Hum Pakistani Kuch akro qism k munmani karnny walo ma sa Hyn. off course not all.

Here’s the situation in the film: Umrao who is a courtesan (tawaif) marries the Nawab’s son (Shahid) and they have a son. But her father-in-law cannot accept a tawaif as his daughter-in-law so he secretly throws her out of the house and forces her to leave the baby behind. He lies to his son that she left because she was only interested in money and wasn’t getting enough money. So the hero is angry and decides to marry another girl. The cruel father-in-law asks the dancer to come and dance at her own husband’s second wedding. The dancer is heartbroken at the second wedding and after seeing her baby son in the cruel father-in-law’s arms and decides to break free of the chains (zanjeer) of the ghungroos on her feet, this symbolically “breaking free” of her chains.
