Actually there are both narrations about who killed and beheaded Imam Hussain (as). It is famous that Shimr (LA) was the one who killed Imam Hussain (as) but there are authentic ahadees that Sanaan Ibn Anas was the one who killed Imam Hussain (as).

As *"Shimr ne kiya tha ne?"* Some tradition says Shimr did it and Some tradition says Sinān b. Anas al-Nakhaʿ Sinān b. Anas al-Nakhaʿī (Arabic: سِنان بن أَنَس النَخَعي) was the one who, based on some sources, decapitated Imam al-Husayn (a) on the Day of 'Ashura' and martyred him. Biography His father's name was Abu 'Amr and his grandfather was Anas; he was known by his grandfather's name. Sinan was born in Kufa. Still, his birth-date is unknown. Ibn Abi al-Hadid reported from Ibn Hilal al-Thaqafi that Sinan was a child during the caliphate of Imam Ali (a) and Imam foretold that he will kill the son of the Apostle of God (s). According to some history books, Sinan was a stupid and insane fighter and poet. There is disagreement about his death date. Day of 'Ashura' At the last moments of Imam al-Husayn's life while he had fallen into the killing pit (Qatligah) and no one from 'Umar b. Sa'd's army dared to finish him off, Sinan b. Anas came to the pit and hit Imam al-Husayn (a) by a spear on the chest and back and martyred the Imam (a). Then Khawli b. Yazid al-Asbahi decided to decapitate Imam al-Husayn (a), but he started shivering and could not do that. Sinan rebuked him and said, "May God break your arms and cut your hands." Then he dismounted from his horse and decapitated Imam al-Husayn (a). After that, he went to 'Umar b. Sa'd's tent and read this poem loudly: Hang gold and silver from my horse's stirrup, I indeed have killed an eminent master. I killed the best person regarding the father and the mother, and the best person regarding the lineage. There are different reports about the one who martyred and decapitated Imam al-Husayn (a). Some say Shimr sat on Imam's chest and decapitated him from the back. It is reported that 'Umar b. Sa'd gave the pure head of Imam al-Husayn (a) to Khawli and ordered him to hurry to Kufa and inform 'Ubayd Allah b. Ziyad about their victory. After 'Ashura' After the death of Yazid, Kufa was in chaos. Sinan, who was known as one of the main killers of Imam al-Husayn (a) started to live a secret life. According to some reports, he left Kufa after al-Mukhtar's uprising and fled to Basra and its outskirts. Some reported that al-Mukhtar's companions killed him. 2. Based on reports in history books, Mukhtar killed Umar bin Saad and sent his head along with some money to Muhammad bin Hanafiyah. Seeing Umar bin Saad’s head, Muhammad bin Hanafiyah prayed for Mukhtar as such: “O Allah, grant Mukhtar the best of rewards on behalf of Muhammad and his Ahlul-Bayt.”[8] Indeed, according to another tradition which has been related by Kashi in his book, it says: “When Ubaidullah bin Ziad and Umar bin Saad’s heads were brought to Imam Zainul Abedeen (a.s.), the Imam prostrated praising and thanking Allah and praying for Mukhtar and wishing him well.”[9] However, based on a another report by Ya’qubi,[10] Ubaidullah bin Ziad’s head was sent to the fourth Imam, Imam Sajjad, peace be upon him, and Umar bin Saad’s head was sent to Muhammad bin Hanafiyah. 3. Considering the historical reports in the sources, ultimately only two heads were sent to Imam Sajjad (a.s.) one of which was Ubaidullah bin Ziad’s head and the other was that of Umar bin Saad. The conclusion is that, considering the reports and what was said above, Umar bin Saad’s head who was killed in the year 66 was sent to Muhammad bin Hanafiyah, because Umar Saad was killed in the same year. Keeping in view the fact that Mukhtar launched his uprising in the month of Rabi’ul Awwal or Rabi al-Thani of the year 66, obviously Umar bin Saad could not have been killed on the nineth of Rabi’ul Awwal of the same year. Considering the distance between Iraq and Hijaz, it is difficult to accept that his head was sent to Imam Sajjad (a.s.). Yes, it can be said and conceded that Umar bin Saad’s head was sent to the Imam but it is not true to say that he was killed on 9th of Rabi’ of the year 66 A.H. As for Ubaidullah bin Ziad’s head which, according to some reports, was sent to Imam Sajjad, the same objection could be raised not to mention the fact that in some history and textual resources such a claim in respect of the ninth of Rabi’ul Awwal is not proven.
