Indiana City Welcomes Myanmar Refugees, Struggles With Syrians

One midwestern U.S. city accustomed to taking in thousands of refugees from all over the world may be changing its policies. Following the Paris terror attacks, the governor of Indiana closed the door to Syrian refugees. As VOA's Carolyn Presutti reports from Fort Wayne, it's now a city divided between hospitality and safety.

As someone who emigrated to Canada from Myanmar (but as a landed immigrant), your comment highlights your ignorance. My family has never taken a cent of any type of government assistance and we've worked for and founded several companies in Canada which employs many fellow Canadians. I'd dare argue that we've contributed to the country that took us in as landed immigrants. While refugees may take some governmental aid, most of them do not stay in the welfare system and are grateful to their host country. Refugees are not a liability, we are the ones who work to rebuild our lives from zero and by doing so actively participate and contribute to the host country's economy. We take the convenience store jobs no one wants and work to embetter ourselves. So the mentality based on being unable afford to support "these people" while the majority of welfare recipients are citizens will actually have a further negative effect on your own economy.

I hope that no more are brought over. We need to start a campaign against it. Our children do not deserve to be bullied by Burmese gangs.
