One of my favourite things about Marcus is how he's so basically unaware of anything that goes on around him, and so unsuited to a life of adventure, that he gives the impression of being a bit of a pushover. But as soon as he's got his head out of the clouds and seen Donovan and his allies for what they are, he goes from 0 to "fuck you" without hesitation.

Fun fact: the little girl who runs the flower stall Indy takes the flower from in Venice is now my friends wife. She's the step daughter of Harrison Fords stunt double Vic Armstrong, she still works in the industry teaching actors to horse ride and doing stunt work including stunt driving in the Fast and Furious franchise. works under the name Nina Armstrong.

Have you seen Mosquito Coast? I believe it's the first time Harrison Ford and River Phoenix were in a movie together. River played his son in that movie, it was a big reason why he was chosen for Last Crusade. It's a good movie, a little on the dark side, but good. ....at least I remember it being good, it's been a little over 30 years since I've seen it.

Yeah, this is also definitely my favorite of the movies - in spite of their excellent pacing, the first two do have scenes that start to drag when you've see them 10 times. 😂 Not so for Last Crusade (for me, at least). Just to answer "where was this filmed?" (although you probably looked it up by now): The opening is mostly Arches National Park in Utah - while the train and Indy's childhood home were filmed in Colorado - even though it's still supposed to take place in Utah. FINALLY going to see those places in person in a couple of months. The college, Indy's father's house and "Berlin" + the airport interior are actually in the UK (been to all of those a few years ago - they still look pretty much the same). While the exterior of the airport is in San Francisco. Castle "Brunwald" is actually a castle in Germany that's now a museum (but doesn't quite look like it from outside - clearly "improved" upon with matte paintings). Most of the desert stuff is in Southern Spain, while the canyon of the crescent moon itself - including the entrance to the Grail's resting place (Petra) - are in Jordan. And yeah, the ride into the sunset does look very western-y - including the light and sky (which never really look quite that way in Spain or Jordan for some reason) - may have to do with it being filmed in Texas. 🙂 There's quite a contrast to most films and TV today, where you can make the Sierra Nevadas look like Afghanistan, and where productions often shoot in other countries at least as much for the tax benefits as for them actually being somewhat authentic locations.

This one holds a special place for me. Like Indy, I had a very fraught relationship with my father. And we had just started to repair it when he died suddenly. So first of all I love this movie because it's just hilarious. Sean Connery and Harrison Ford have instant chemistry, as you say the backstory is so well conveyed, and the action is top notch. I also love the puzzles. What's less obvious is that, as what amount to modern holy knights, Indy and his father are being protected by miracles in a few places. All that ridiculous luck? You called the ricochet that kills the tank driver and saves him miraculous yourself. Keep that in mind if you watch the fourth movie, it'll save you a lot of headache :p

It's always a treat to see someone experience this movie for this first time. I was 5 when this came out in the summer of 1989, and each of my divorced parents took me to see this - ergo, I wouldn't call this merely one of my favorite movies of all time, I would call it a "benchmark," if that makes any sense. Now as an adult, many things have come full circle for me - I've spent the last couple years putting together my own authentic Indy costume from the makers of Harrison's gear in the 3 movies. I also collect autographs and have many from this and Raiders (Kazim, of the Brotherhood of the Cruciform Sword, just signed my autograph a couple days ago). The screenwriter, Jeffrey Boam, passed away in 2000, but his son was awesome enough to sign an autograph for me AND last but not least, the actor who played Fedora and crowned Indy, signed "You lost today Donald, but that doesn't mean you have to like it," that's framed in my living room.

The pacing, the acting, the writing, the music, just the everything. There is not one scene that isn't iconic, from the "No ticket" quote, to the "You are named after the dog." Will never get old. The "Indiana, let it go" quote and the four comrades riding off into the sunset at the end with that iconic soundtrack will never fail to give me goosebumps. Amazing flick.

I was so excited for you to see this installment of the series! This one is my favorite as well. The balance between brilliantly choreographed action, historical references, the humorous dialogue and the father-son relationship was so well-executed. Fantastic casting, and the details! I love that they explained Harrison Ford's actual scar on his chin happening from his character cutting himself on his own whip, when fending off the lion. Still one of my all-time favorite films. :) LOVE this movie.

Your reaction somehow got me to thinking about that moment when Indy reaches for the Grail, tries, but has to let it go, listens to his father. I had that moment, but never realized it until now. On a junior class project in high school, we learned about mountain climbing over several weeks, scraped together gear for everybody, then climbed Mt Hood, outside of Portland here. There's minimal roping or crampons needed on the South side approach, but we all carried ice axes and it was a real effort. I was over weight, but determined, so I was the last one to the top, accompanied only by the climbing leader, my physics teacher, who had climbed all the big peaks of the world. The very top is all snow, and is an overhang off over the other side. If you stood on it you would fall off, down the opposite side of the mountain, actually if you stood anywhere near it at all, probably within, like, ten feet, but who knows? It isn't a steep part, maybe six feet higher than sure ground. So I spread out like a face down snow angel and scooted up the last bit to reach the top. I could sense the risk, yet still I inched so slowly closer trying to just touch the tip top after all the hard work of the climb. My teacher's words were very calm, but he said not to go farther, it wasn't worth it, and asked me to please come back. And I did. My head was higher than the top, so I guess that counts, but I never touched the highest point, let it go instead, after all that determination. It's a sort of personal victory I never realized. I had forgotten it, really. Coming up on forty years ago. Thanks for the memory.

My favorite out of the three. Endearing, funny, plenty of action. Thanx for the perfect reaction. P.S. When young Indy whipped himself in the chin, it's to show how he got his scar he as an adult. Harrison Ford does actually have a chin scar that was a result of "a fast car crash," which Ford described as "a real mundane way of earning it." He slammed his head first into the steering wheel, followed by some "inept emergency surgery," Take care..xx

This is for sure my favourite of the series. I love how you touch on the dad being the one who despite having studied the Holy Grail his entire life that we know of, is the one to tells Indy to let it go. But, the way he does it is pretty epic. Throughout the movie he consistently refers to Indy as Junior but when he's trying to pull him up he doesn't say Junior, instead he says: "Indiana. Indiana. Let it go." And even though the temple they are in is falling apart around them after that first Indiana the entire movie goes silent: nothing exists in that moment but Indy, his dad, and those 5 words. Chills! I feel like you didn't do number 4 and that's fine but you may want to check it out anyway since there is a 5th one coming out this year. Well, either 2023 or 2024 but I think 2023. Also, more Harrison Ford is something I'd personally like to see as I really love Harrison Ford as an actor.

Then a few years later my best friend got Last Crusade for his birthday on VHS and we watched it together right away and loved it. I finally saw Raiders a few years later when it was on TV and recorded it. Many years later when Crystal Skull came out my friend and I went to the premiere. Also for his 30th birthday we held a surprise party for him at the local small town theater and played his favorite Indy movie on the big screen. Temple of Doom. The end was filmed at Petra, Jordan. In real life, Connery was only about 15 years older than Ford. This is absolutely my favorite Indy film and probably one of my top 10 outside of Star Trek.

Sean Connery is a legend, he was James Bond and there has never been any actors playing James Bond after him, the other actors took on the role of playing Sean Connery after him 🙂 That scream at 32:44 in this video, when he throws up the hand grenade is called the "wilhelm scream", it is in almost every Spielberg movie and many other hollywood movies like Star Wars, it started as a joke with Spielberg adding the same scream to different movies or something like that 🙂 I like the fact that Indiana Jones father is that genius who has his mind in the clouds when it comes to so many trivial things

I mean you hit the nail on the head on pretty much everything I love about this movie. It's pretty perfect in my opinion...perfect pacing, perfect chemistry between father and son...and then the ending sequence, it's truly iconic! And I agree that Indiana and his dad have great development. I love their relationship because it gave more nuance to Indy and they both clearly had so much love for each other but it was just never expressed or received in a way that was fulfilling. It really reminds me of those parent-child relationships that put a lot more focus on external things like achievement or independence when a child just needs to be seen for who they are, separate from anything outside of them. Parents do that with the best intentions of course, but to me it really is so simple...Be there for your kids...not just your physical presence, but BE there. Listen to them, acknowledge them, not just as someone you talk at or someone you can mould/"teach". I think Indy's upbringing did shape him into the "hero" and the charming (yet grumpy) rouge we know and love, but deep down he's still that little kid inside that just wants approval or a hug from his dad. It adds so much humanity to his character so I totally get why you got the feels in those scenes. PS: I think you might have realised it already but young Indy was played by River Phoenix (Chris in Stand By Me). Such a talented actor...RIP :( Anyway, I had so much fun rewatching this with you on Patreon. I'm so glad it's you're favourite one too! :)

I love this one as much as the first, maybe more. Every scene with Ford and Connery is gold from start to finish.

Ah. A great film and brings and it brings back happy memories. The whole cast is great. Harrison Ford and Sean Connery, obviously. Also Denholm Elliot (Marcus). As for Salah, in case you did not realise, he is played by Welsh actor John Rhys-Davies who was Gimli in the Lord of the Rings. (He also voiced Treebeard!) Finally, they had young Indiana cut himself with the whip as an in-joke - I don't know if you have ever noticed but Harrison Ford has a scar on his chin. This was a nod to that. Nice reaction.

Love your reaction and thank you for doing all 3 movies. I grew up seeing this trilogy in the theaters and this is still my favorite. Sean Connery was THE choice as Indy's father and bringing back Marcus and Sallah was perfect. I love that you laughed at all the jokes! I've seen other reactions to this movie and most of them didn't seem to get the humor in it, but you did! If you want more Indy backstory, you might wanna check out the TV series Lucas did called The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles. It showed Indy as a little boy and as a teenager. Great series with excellent acting, writing, and around the world locations.

There are some really great videos of the making if this movie. In the final chase horse vs. tank, that was Harrison doing most of the horseback riding. They joked about how difficult it was to keep the hat on his head while on horseback… thought about stapling it! Lol.

Strangely Sean Connery has credits in Raiders of the Lost Arc as well. If you want some movies that show Connery's range, Entrapment, Zardoz, Highlander, The Name of the Rose, Finding Forrester, Medicine Man, and I would have included the Rock and The Hunt for the Red October (although Russian speaking friends tell me his Russian was hard on the ears, mostly from his thick accent) too, except you said you've seen them. Even his voice acting in Dragonheart was pretty great, as great as anyone in Kung Fu Panda, I'd say. (The effects are dated but it's still a plenty fun movie.) And The Name of the Rose is just a great movie. He always plays smart, sometimes a fool, but never dumb, always capable.

Dr. Schneider was played by the Irish actress, Alison Doody (yes, Doody). Ironically, she was also a 'Bond girl' by the name of Jenny Flex in the 1985 Roger Moore James Bond film 'A View to a Kill'. Ironic since she appears next to Sean Connery here.

I'm right there with you on 1 and 3 for the order and reasons. I grew up with Sean Connery as James Bond, and all that he was able to be was brought to this character. The chemistry between Harrison and Sean was perfect, all the actors played their parts so well, there was a lot to the plot but not so much that it was confusing. An ideal movie. At Disneyland, AT&T sponsored the Indiana Jones ride and in the exit tunnel next to their logo was "Choose Wisely".

So when I was young my mum taped these movies off tv but she thought some parts were to scary for me and my brother so during the quick aging scene (and the heart pulling scene in temple of doom) she paused the recording so if would skip that part. The first time I saw it live on tv I nearly shit myself. To this day 20+ years later those scenes still creep me out lol this is 100% my favourite Indians Jones movie by far!!!!
