Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny is the 5th movie in the Indiana Jones franchise from Lucasfilm. While we have previously seen trailers of Indiana Jones 5 Lucasfilm recently showed the whole movie at the Cannes Film Festival in France, giving the professional critics the opportunity to review it.
As this is the last movie where Harrison Ford will reprise his role as Indiana Jones he is also joined by Phoebe Waller-Bridge (also working on the Tomb Raider TV series on Amazon Prime), who may well replace him in the future. With time travel and action abound, is Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny worth watching after the critic's reviews?

Indiana Jones and the dial of destiny reviews are out after the movie premiered at the Cannes Film Festival 2023 in France. But despite the fact these are access professional critics, they don't like it much either. At best a mixed set of reviews, but really, they swing between hating the movie and being strictly luke warm. All the reviews warn about the ending, mention that large sections are boring and it generally relies on nostalgia to leave any impression at all. But this third section of the movie? That goes "off the rails" according to the critics, setting up Indiana Jones to "pass on the whip" to the next generation. Which given that the reviews have said Indiana Jones is led around by Phoebe Waller-Bridge who is obviously, more witty, smarter and cynical. The "perfect" replacement. As this movie is reportedly the most expensive Lucasfilm movie ever made at nearly 300 million dollars, Indiana Jones 5 requires 800 million to 1 billion dollars to become profitable. Will mixed reviews get there? Can nostalgia and brand alone carry it despite it's reviews? And after Indiana Jones and the Crystal Skull, are people even willing to give it the benefit of the doubt in the first place? Let me know your thoughts down below, and as always, thanks for watching :)

@Sebastian_A_Var_Herman

Agree. I’m have being around fanfic writers, and you can easily tell who are passionate, who are skilled and who are bitter latentless hacks. Fanfic is usually written by people who love and are very passionate about a franchise, it’s story, characters and world. Not all fanfics are good because the number of skilled people and passionate people isn’t equal, but even in bad stories you can see the love the fic writer has for the franchise. This isn’t that, this a work of hate so transparent you can see the bitter face of the screen writers and producers, who only did this because they “want to fix” the franchise they hate. A hatred that comes from knows but not accepting that they can’t create something as good and memorable.

Not just the heroes. Thery have been destroying the Family Values and still are. Look at the recent spate of films. Virtually none have any kind of what we would say are normal family traits. All the men are shamed, beaten down, pushed to the second place or straight up villains (especially if they're WHYTE). Han being killed off like he was in TFA was just the beginning. I know Harrison always wanted Han to die but even so I doubt he ever thought it would be his own son who would do it. I imagine he wasn't too impressed although he did the part. So that along with Luke in TLJ and Leia in TRoS meant 3 of the most iconic characters in Cinematic history were cucked to hell. Also the Mary Poppins sequence was abysmal. They turned the Skywalker/Solo family into a fkn joke especially when they gave Rey the name she didn't fkn earn because that's what they hate. Family.
@mizu7662
@mizu7662 Жыл бұрын
@@evosquest1 I still think Han dying in TFA was great, it solidified Kylo Ren as irredeemably infatuated with the dark side and brought Han's character development to its ultimate conclusion as he died trying to save his son after starting as a cynical smuggler who was nearly ready to ditch his forged by fire comrades to their death because 'its not my problem the empire is doing evil things so long as I can get by in life'. But then they fucked it up by having whiny bitch boy Ben Solo still having doubts and being reedemable while ruining Luke's character in a way that made no damn sense in regards to everything we know about his character and character arc to 'subvert expectations' when TLJ rolled around. At which point Han's death starts to retroactively seem to have less meaning because killing off the OG heroes to make way for the new ones is now standard practice instead of his death being a one of a kind meaningful thing.

I’m in the smaller camp of people who actually enjoyed The Last Jedi, but that might say more about the time I was going through when it came out - I kind of didn’t mind seeing a lot of stuff burn down. But in retrospect, yeah, that movie and the general tone of what they’ve done to Star Wars is pretty disrespectful to the legacy that they have to build upon. And by this time, with everything else they’ve done, and now the whole mess of Indiana Jones 5, yeah it just seems like they are blatantly trying to dismantle the work and legacies that they have technical stewardship over.

In a real world, spending hundreds of millions of dollars on a project that fails and loses money would be considered bad. Destroying beloved brand icons would be considered bad. Alienating millions of the fans of that brand would be bad. Doing so over and over again would get you fired. Why hasn't she paid any price for the deliberate destruction of these brands? Two things that they've got VERY wrong in these last two movies... 1 - The Macguffin should always be strongly connected to faith and be something that was literally touched by God. Its all about faith and the good people fighting the baddies who want to use godlike powers when man was not meant to wield it (the Ark, the Grail, the holy stones). It should never be simply magic for the sake of it, or scifi. 2 - The female co-star should be fiesty and know how to put Indy in his place, BUT she should also be a beautiful woman who can't help but fall for Indy's charms and going weak at the knees for him. If you have her be young enough to be his granddaughter and have all desire stripped from the film, then you simply have a young know it all constantly bitching at an old man with no payoff other than putting him down.
@jamespfp

RE: Point #1 -- I agree with what you're saying there, but I would define the boundary differently. The plot devices in "Raiders", "Temple of Doom" and "Last Crusade" were at best semi-historical and *not* extant, which is to say, there is little to no hope for serious archeologists to ever encounter and document the actual Ark of the Covenant or the Holy Grail. "Touched By God" is another way of saying these things are Transcendent, or in other words, Fictional to our reality because we rarely (if ever) actually encounter them. But I get the distinct impression the "seed" of the McGuffin "Dial of Destiny" in this film isn't a device which was described by ancient Greek sci-fi writers; no, I'm guessing this is Revisionist History about the Antikythera Device (or something very much like it) and that in my opinion is much worse than dumb lobbyist appropriation of something which was purely fictional. In other words, "they" (the Lobbyists) are only too happy to denigrate and devalue actual Western civilization and its accomplishments.

But bitching at him and belittling a man with decades of experience, who literally found the holy grail (!) because he's just that good at what he does....Are we supposed to treat all experienced and wise folk with contempt and disgust now? In "Gran Torino", Clint Eastwood played an older man, and people genuinely liked him in it. There was a series called "The Young Indiana Jones", which had an older actor playing Indiana Jones in the present day, telling stories of his youth, played by a younger actor. Sean Connery was great playing Indiana Jones father. Unfortunately, this is Kathleen Kennedy trying to replace Indiana Jones with an empowered whamin who is the bestest evah, which there really wasn't a demand for.

Serious question, how does Feeble Wailing-Bitch even _have_ a film career? Beyond political nepotism or affirmative action, she is the human embodiment of the word "shrill." Less than a vacuum of charisma. A veritable archetypal spinster, either old before her time or with a _really_ good skin care regimen. No sane person would have anything to do with her on-set, off-set, or as any of the harridan characters she consistently plays. ...If I didn't know better (and _I don't),_ I'd say she's being deployed/forced into entertainment as a form of psychological warfare. Dark series on Netflix is a masterpiece and the whole concept revolves around time-travel. The thing is, as others said, lazy writers use time-travel / parallel universe as some kind of Deus Ex Machina : the hero goes back in time, changes something, add a little bit of "messed with time" for the plot and that's it, you got out of a writing wall in the laziest way possible. Good writers explore the concept fully and how it influences their characters in more ways than just "yay cool power, let's see what I can do with that !". In Dark, they took all the tropes you could think of, and masterfully wrote them in a coherent story because they know how to do their job.

I've seen some fan fiction that's superbly crafted by people who really know the characters inside and out- these writers are people who love and respect the source material (for example, Star Wars fan fic writers who have clearly read the best of the books... multiple times). I often wish these fan fiction writers would be hired for sequels instead of "professional" writers. We'd certainly get better quality content, and it would be from people who don't hate us or the original IP.

They don't like real fans to write for these things because they know they will rebel against any changes to the story. The corrupt writers want to add their agenda in these stories. If someone as big as Henry Cavil couldn't stay in the Witcher as an actor because he's always at odds with the show runner then how much more with writers who are fans? The real problematic people here are the show runners in Netflix and woke directors for in other studios.

I recently learned about the game "Fear and Hunger" and was captivated by it's original world and story. Turns out ONE guy made huge parts of the game himself and also wrote the story and characters on his own. Now that's what I call a beautiful display of talent, this is a writer movie or gaming companies should strive to hire. A team of many writers will never have the same dedication and passion for their story as a single writer who puts everything he has into it without any brakes.

The quote, "It's not what you believe in but how hard you believe in it" perfectly sums up everything wrong with the world today. Assuming human civilization survives and we have future historians at all to look back upon our time and diagnose where it all went wrong, I predict they will call it "The Age of Solipsism". We live in a time when people will unironically say things like "my truth" as if there were many truths to choose from. People seem to think that reality is up for grabs, facts can never be truly known and all knowledge is just opinion. What's really important, so the modern logic seems to be, is what you WANT to believe instead of learning whether those beliefs actually reflect reality.

There's another dimension to it as well. Some people do believe that "how hard you believe in it" means that reality is subject to their WILL. So, if they can either (a) wish hard enough, or (b) get enough people wishing hard enough, reality will and MUST adjust to their expectations. It's sort of self-deification, when you get right down to it, and...well, that's not really any different from most other ages of history. Those who think they've evolved beyond the lessons of history are doomed to repeat it.

The scuttlebutt out of Disney is this movie makes money or a certain high ranking lady gets very publicly fired. This could be the warning shot against future woke movies. I'm a horror/scifi cinemaphile and I've an observation to offer Hollywood. A lot of actors in the 50s to 70s were older and the writing fit to emphasize mental strengths rather than physical vigor. Detectives, archeologists, investigators of the occult and such characters require only a good story. Christopher Lee and his British peers are a fine example. I was a kid thrilling to the adventures of old men and it was cerebral where now Hollywood assumes everyone is moronic and fit only for roller coaster rides. With a heavy dose of social programming.

This is why I hate critics. They say that it’s absolute dogshit in their criteria but the reason why they give it a good “review” is to make the rotten tomato score “fresh” because something did well in there which makes it immediately worthy of its fresh rating.

@DeflatingAtheism

The problem lies with Rotten Tomatoes, though you can say it's a feature not a bug, since the score is so often politicized. RT makes a judgement call on each review, and reports a binary rotten-or-fresh score, and aggregates those scores. So a movie that every critic agrees is middlingly above-average would get a 100% fresh rating. RT should demand that every publication that wants to be aggregated should have their critics commit to a normalized 1-to-10 rating.

I don’t know why I was holding on to hope that James Mangold would at least respect (if not the fans) Harrison, Indiana, and the franchise itself to give it at least a lukewarm send off. But no… He, Kathleen, and Hollywood couldn’t RESIST the same old dry low hanging fruit of belittling an old man due to his skin color, and gender. He’s lost, he’s confused, he’s impulsive, he’s gotta be humbled, he needs her saving him 90% of the time… I’ve seen it a billion times before… it’s all they know how to do, it’s so goddamn pathetic. I’m just so tired. I just want a good entertaining movie that isn’t divisive, purposely agitating, or manipulative… is that too much to ask for?? God. I pray that Indy and The Little Mermaid show Disney that people are 110% fed up with the identity politics poisoning entertainment. Coming from an avid classic Disney fan, I hope these movies hurt them enough to panic and pivot again, making massive layoffs and promising actual quality like they used to produce… but who am I kidding?

Hold on sir, Mangold gave us Logan, to this day the most respectful send off to an old, past his prime Wolverine. Dare I say it’s the best superhero movie ever made, with the OG Spiderman movies 20 years ago. So, my guess is Mangold actually had to twist and turn to every whim of the ESG BS currently in Hollywood. And before anyone says anything about the MCU, apart from Iron Man 1 and Infinity War. The rest are absolute garbage. Garbage.

Indiana Jones 6 plot pitch: It is revealed that Indiana Jones had ANOTHER son named Kentucky. Kentucky Jones will be played by none other than Steven Seagal. The film will be called “Indiana Jones and the Search for Kentucky Fried Chicken” The film will have a budget of 1 billion dollars, since this will be a way for Disney to surpass the cost it took to make Avatar 2, thus building up hype. The movie will also be written, produced, and directed by Steven Seagal. At the end of the film, Shia and Kentucky Jones (Seagal) will meet and search for the lost city of Atlantis to carry on Indy’s legacy. This ending will set up for “Indiana Jones 7: The Last Jones”, who will later be revealed to be the third child of Professor Indy, “Ohio Jones” played by Neil Breen. Again, since Steven Seagal is writing, directing, and producing this film, he can rewrite and take the story to wherever he sees fit.

If Indy has to "pass the torch", then it should be passed in the way it was passed at the beginning of "Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade". Indy did his best, but greater experience beat him. The fedora man came up, made a quip, then put his hat on Indy... passing the torch. They could easily have one of his younger _male_ students, or maybe have him teaching high school history now, and the youngster is like the boy from Jurassic Park... full of enthusiasm, full of esoteric knowledge. And through the course of the movie, frequently have Indy have to bail him out, and teach him moral lessons... through actions. And finally, by the ending, have the boy do something right, something that impresses the old man... and the old man puts his hat on the boy's head. And you know the kid's going to be alright. (watch "Guarding Tess", especially the ending, for a similar idea)
