The prologue was excellent. It explained Indy’s origins as an archaeologist, his religious background, his fear of snakes, using the whip, getting the chin scar, receiving his name, and wearing the classic fedora all in only 10 minutes. This is why I appreciate and enjoy classic movies; they could make great introductions instead of bad exposition dumps.

A fun fact I only found out recently: The character called 'Fedora' in the Utah 1912 sequence of this film was originally identified in the first draft of the script as Abner Ravenwood, who would later be Indy's mentor and father of love-interest Marion. As the script was revised several times, the name was dropped and the character only referred to as 'Fedora.'

It would have been great to get some back story on him since his prologue scene felt like it was crammed with everything that was the foundation of Indy. But really the true inspiration for Indiana Jones is Charlton Heston in The Secret of the Incas. Indy is a direct copy of him in almost every way from his look to his personality.

Though they removed that bit from the final script it always stuck with me and it's part of my headcanon. Also, the dog Indiana who's explaind to be the origin of Indy's nickname is based on George Lucas' own childhood dog, who happens to also be the inspiration for Chewbacca.

Maybe if it was a Lucas and Spielberg level project, we could have seen a better comparison. But, as it stands, it just doesn't work for me. Maybe because Ford had cemented himself as Jones by then. And maybe there were just too many rip offs at the time. Even Madonna and Sean Penn got into the act. Glad you liked this one! I wanted to be a nerd a moment and mention that the aircraft they left Berlin in was not a blimp, but was a rigid airship. The difference is that blimps are non-rigid airships; basically fill themselves out like balloons and the interior gas form their shape. What the Jones' were riding was a rigid airship, which has a metallic framework forming the craft's shape. There is also the semi-rigid airship, which usually has a hard metallic spine and maybe a little framework but is mostly shaped by the lifting gas. Airships today use helium, which is much safer and almost as good a lifting gas as hydrogen, which is what was used back then (leading to the Hindenburg accident, another rigid airship). Today, blimps make up the vast majority of airships, though some people are trying to have the rigid ones make a comeback, as they can be used to deliver heavy cargo to areas where airplanes can't land, for example.

A few years ago I read that Denholm Elliott, who played Marcus Brody, learned he was HIV positive in 1987. Which means he must have known during the production of Last Crusade that he didn't have much time left, since there really wasn't an effective treatment for HIV at that time. It makes watching his performance in Last Crusade more poignant, knowing that its issues of life, death, and immortality, were probably very real for him personally. RIP Mr. Elliott.

The ultimate father and son story, where Indy teams up with his dad to fight off the Nazis for the Holy Grail. Originally Sir Laurence Olivier was considered to play the role, but fell ill and had to drop out. Gregory Peck (To Kill A Mockingbird, Cape Fear, The Omen) was also considered, until Sean Connery was cast. Olivier died in July 1989, two months after the film's release. The original Opening scene was going to have Indy battling ghosts in a haunted Scottish mansion, but this was deemed too similar to Spielberg's Poltergeist. Another draft had Indy battling The Monkey King for the mythical Fountain of Youth. It was then settled that Indy would team up with his father for one crazy adventure. The film was a box office and critical success, making $474 million dollars ($950 million dollars today) against a $50 million dollar budget. It won the Oscar for Best Sound Editing.

No.1 film of 1989, Oscar winner for sound editing and for the planned trilogy, it was a great ending. Ford & Connery, although they were playing Sr. and Jr., they were actually 12 years apart in age. I loved it for being more than just an adventure story. At it's core, a story of father and son rebuilding their relationship and working together for a greater cause. The opening prologue is absolutely amazing; River Phoenix (r.I.p) did an excellent job at playing a young Indy. It’s such a shame we lost him for too soon. George Lucas co-wrote Indiana Jones with Spielberg. The line about Iine about Indy being named after the dog, is a nod to Lucas's Alaskan Malamute, Indiana. During the time when Lucas was writing Star Wars, he would drive around Northern California, with his dog; Indiana sat next to him. This furry co-pilot he had became the basis for Chewbacca. Another fun little fact relating to Star Wars is that Michael Sheard appears as Adolf Hitler, whom Jones briefly encounters at the book-burning rally in Berlin. Although a non-speaking role, Sheard could speak German and had already portrayed Hitler three times during his career. He had also appeared as Admiral Ozzel in The Empire Strikes Back and as Oskar Schomburg in Raiders of the Lost Ark. In the same scene, Ronald Lacey, who played Toht in Raiders of the Lost Ark, cameos as Heinrich Himmler. Also, Julian Glover who played Donovan appeared in The Empire Strikes Back as General Veers. Fun Fact: the speedboat chase sequence wasn’t filmed in Italy. It is in fact Tilbury Docks near London.

You highlighted the contrast between the two Dr. Jones perfectly and how they had very differing experiences of archaeology. Sr was very much the bookish scholar that would have spent decades in a library researching texts to find clues to construct a diary of grail lore and obviously thought violence was unbecoming of gentlemen, whilst Indy was more suited to getting your hands dirty to reap the rewards of the work of academics of previous generations. "it was an obsession, I never understood it and neither did mom" - I've watched this movie probably a hundred times by now and only after you commented did I see the obvious that Indy should understand the obsession because he's exactly the same as his father in that respect. Thanks for that 👍.

Re: "obsession" - I might be overthinking this, but I can't help but wonder if it goes a little deeper. We only ever see Indy going after artefacts that he's reasonably sure genuinely exist - OK, so the Ark of the Covenant is at least semi-mythical, but he's somewhat arm-twisted into going after that one by the US government and it's ultimately only one pursuit of many over the years. Henry Sr. on the other hand has literally dedicated his entire life to researching a single artefact that may or may not actually exist. Up until now, Indy has to some extent set his approach up in direct opposition to that of his father by taking risks in pursuit of tangible objects from history - possibly because he resented his father's chasing after myths in the face of his mother's very real terminal illness.

Saw Raiders in the theater in 1981, never saw the second (in a theater) and never much cared for that one, but took my kids to see this third one in 1989 and loved it nearly as much as the first. I know you guys ho through entire series of film, and you probably will not follow my advice but I'm giving it anyway : stop at this one. All four characters riding off in the sunset is the absolute best conclusion to the series. Whatever was done after does not come even close. Anyway great reaction as always ! It's wonderful to see River Phoenix ape a lot of Harrison Ford's delivery and physical mannerisms in his short time onscreen. It's subtle, but it's definitely there. Phoenix had previously worked with Ford on 'The Mosquito Coast', and was apparently Ford's first choice to play a younger version of himself; indeed, in promotional interviews for 'Last Crusade', Phoenix stated that he had often childishly mimicked Ford on the set of 'Mosquito Coast'.

One of the best movie experiences I have had watching this in the cinema and one of my favorite films ever, it was nice to witness your enjoyment of it. Connery's prude Victorian persona as Indy's dad really worked. Also I never noticed until your commentary the similarity of Indy's obsession with the Cross mirrored his Dads with the cup. Finally practical set piece action is the winner here showing why many modern movies fail with the reliance on CGI instead of using CGI to polish/enhance the scene.
