Indiana Jones *Raiders of the Lost Ark* is a helluva ride!!

Welcome back to my channel! I think I am extremely Hyper to sit down and watch this!
Today we are embarking on a journey I have been on before but not since I was a kid! I watch so many movies but I haven't rewatched this one in decades! This is for sure one of the best movies of all time! And even thou I am not super stoked on the newest edition to this franchise (I felt it was perfect left alone) especially with my favourite "The Last Crusade" as a close to the trilogy! I wanted to watch these to refresh my memory of one of our most beloved characters of all time! Indiana Jones! and HOLY COW does it ever deliver!!

Original Movie: Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981)

The reason that Belloq and the Nazis take the Ark into the desert to open it is explained in the movie. They say that they want to open it here to make sure it contains the ten commandments. They don't want to take a chance of bringing it to Hitler, opening it there, and only then finding out that it's empty.

That was Belloq's excuse, which made sense. However, he had his own ambitions and hoped he could use the power of the ark to be an unstoppable force. He did not want to just hand it over and lose it. It cost him his life, though.

@@thorguffYes, Belloq did not like working for the Nazis - he says this to Indy earlier. But he chose to do it, knowing who the Nazis were. He had his own ambitions, but he was surrounded by Nazis here. There was no way he thought that he wouldn't have to hand the ark over to Hitler. The reason he gives - to open it first in the desert to make sure it's real instead of waiting to open it in front of Hitler - is a valid and true one.

The medallion was hot from the fire. When he picked it up it burned the imprint into his hand. The Nazis were able to cast a replica medallion from the imprint which is why their medallion only had markings on one side and thus they were digging in the wrong spot.

I saw this film in theaters when my grandparents took me to see it. It had a profound impact on the rest of my life. I didn't become an archeologist, but that didn't stop me from climbing over a ruined castle's wall in Germany just to see what was left inside (nothing but ruin) only to have Polizei waiting for me to come out. I also couldn't help digging a few holes when I was in Iraq in 2003 just to see what I'd find (once again, nothing but I still did it). I'm glad you enjoyed this film!

The Ark is definitely the most iconic artifact in Indiana Jones. It's holy power was brilliantly foreshadowed when Indy showed the government agents a picture of the Ark and mentioned "lightning, fire, power of God". What we saw in the climax was exactly what Indy had said to the agents and it is both mighty and terrifying. I always figured that the ghosts of the Ark mark those that had their eyes open, the lightning strikes them down and then the fire incinerates the bodies leaving no trace of anything left. As for Indy and Marion keeping their eyes closed, it makes sense that Indy would have done his research on the Ark by looking it up in the Bible which does state that no man can look upon God and live which also applies to the Ark if it's opened so keeping their eyes closed shows they respected God for doing so which spared their lives.

Ya only the Israeli high priests were allowed to look at the Ark directly and they only did it once a year at Passover if I remember correctly.

it's based on Lot's wife who was told not to look back at Sodom and Gomorrah being destroyed by the wrath of God but she looked and was turned into a statue made of salt.

GREAT REACT!! At the 2019 D23 Expo, I met Imagineer, Tony Baxter, who Autographed my "The Imagineering Way" Book, where he talks about getting the Idea of the Jeep "Backing-up" (In actuality, the Walls move Forward) in the Ride from going through a Car Wash, adding "Indy's my Favorite." ^_^

Here's a fun anecdote you might enjoy. From a ScreenRant article: "While the scene is still in character for Indiana Jones as he exhaustedly pulls out the gun because he’s in a time crunch to find Marion Ravenwood (Karen Allen), the original plan for the sequence was markedly different. Spielberg originally intended for Indy to engage in a sword fight with the instigator, though behind-the-scenes troubles on set changed the minds of those involved. At the time of filming the scene, Harrison Ford and much of the crew were extremely sick with dysentery, so filming a long fight scene would have been too taxing. Ford suggested Indy just “shoot the sucker” instead, to which director Steven Spielberg obliged."

It's amazing this film was rated PG considering what happens to Belloq and the Nazis when the Ark is opened. At the time there was no PG-13 rating so it was either G, PG or R. For a lot of young kids seeing this movie, seeing those melting faces scarred a lot of us. The next movie - Temple of Doom - pushes the boundaries even further, helping to create the PG-13 rating.

The standards were much more lax in those days. Several PG movies from back then would even be R-rated today I think. "Beastmaster" is one that totally traumatized me with its extreme violence and overall very disturbing tone. I still loved it though. You could even have pretty significant nudity and still get PG-rated in those days. "Clash of the Titans" (1981) is one of several examples. The "Andromeda Strain" contains significant nudity and violence and was somehow G-rated. Compare that to "The King's Speech" which was rated R because it says the F-word too many times in a scene where it's absolutely necessary to say it because of the plot.

@@Trip_FontaineThe movie Airplane! came out in 1980 and got a PG-rating, and there's a scene where a naked woman runs in front of the camera and all you can see are her breasts. There's a lost a lot of sexual innuendo. I've watched more than reaction video of that film where the reactors ask "How is this a PG rated movie?" The ratings system is messed up. If you say "fuck" just once then you can get a PG-13 rating, even if the movies contains lots of violence. But if you say "fuck" two times or more, it's an R-rating. On the commentary track for Gosford Park, Robert Altman said he deliberately put a bunch of "fuck"s in the dialogue because he wanted the movie to be rated R and "I didn't want a bunch of teenagers seeing my movie. But there is nothing else in the movie to justify the R-rating - it's a murder mystery but the murder is offscreen and there little to none blood or guts, and no nudity or sex. But the American ratings system thinks it's ok for teenagers to see sex and violence, but there's no way they can hear the word "fuck" more than once.

Ship's captain Katanga is played by George Harris, who went on to be Kingsley in the Harry Potter films... 🙂

After the map room scene they are suddenly free again because a small detail that's lost is that Sallah is the main Egyptian in charge of the excavation. So of course they let him go to then return later, but it's not that clear how he 'gets away', because he doesn't have to, they let him go.

Mad Max The Road Warrior, The Evil Dead, Das Boot, Excalibur, The Fox and the Hound, Clash of the Titans, Escape From New York, T.A.P.S, Stripes, Heavy Metal, American Werewolf In London, The Hand, Halloween 2, Outland, Quest For Fire...so many more. Looking at your thumbnail again reminded me of something I recently heard Billy Boyd say on Friendship Onion with him and Dom Monaghan. Great reaction to a classic movie! Good old Pat Roach, British actor, bodybuilder, and wrestler who appeared in all three Indiana Jones movies and died in each one of them, twice in this one. He played one of the Sherpas in the gunfight at the bar and the brawny German boxer at the airplane, dying as each. In Temple of Doom he was the Thugee who regretted having the extra long sash that led to his most gruesome (thankfully unseen) death. And in Crusade his death ended up on the cutting room floor, but he is seen briefly escorting an SS officer to the zeppelin. He also had a major supporting role in Willow, where he played the evil General Kael, his face hidden behind a skull mask on his helmet all movie. I love that the Ark knew that those who opened it were evil, so it destroyed all who looked on it and then their bodies were . . . removed . . . so that nothing of the impure remained. Which is almost more terrifying. There were dozens of men. And now there is nothing to show that they were even there. The shot at the end of this gigantic warehouse filled with thousands upon thousands of crates was what inspired the creators of the very good and fun SyFy show Warehouse 13, which is also absolutely worth watching. 🙂

to explain for everyone confused about tasting the poison. its important to test the freshness to identify where and when potential attacjers may be, tasting the poison from a poison dart won't affect you if its digested. its the kind o poison that needs to get to your blood stream through piercing the skin. digesting it diassolves in your stomach acids.

The reason why Indiana Jones says not to look at it. It is because only Moses his brother Aaron and Aaron's sons were the only ones allowed to look upon the contents of the Ark of the Covenant. No one else was allowed

@@holddowna This is also why the Nazis were digging in the wrong place... they only had one side of the medallion, burned into Toht's flesh, to go on. Indiana Jones had both sides, which further explained how long the staff should be and at what area of the map room to place the medallion.

'81, the year I graduated High School. The guide at the beginning of the movie, betrays Indiana, then dies on the spike trap, is Alfred Molina. Aka Doc Oc from Spiderman.

The Ark of the Covenant was sacred to the Israelites. A chest made of acacia wood and covered with gold, inside were Aaron's rod, a jar of manna (which fed the twelve tribes in the desert), and, I believe, the tablets of the Law. The Ark travelled with the tribes during their wandering years; no one was permitted to touch it except Levites. To do so was to die. As part of the travelling Temple, it was placed in the Holy of Holies, into which only the high priest was allowed to enter, and that only once per year, to make intercession for the people. During that time, the Presence came down and sat on the Mercy Seat, on top of the Ark.

Alfred Molina did a great job with the tarantulas. The wrangler (yes, there is such a thing as a tarantula wrangler) placed tarantula after tarantula on him and he said he was doing his best to contain his freakout as each tarantula was placed. The thing is each one was a male and they didn't do anything but hang out until the wrangler placed one female on him and then they all started going wild. The result is what you see in the finished film.

Most people don't recognize young Doc Ock.😉All those skeletons Marion runs into are probably the bodies of the workers that buried the Ark. Killing the workers would help keep the Ark's location secret. Yeah, The Last Crusade is my favorite!🏆How can you beat Harrison Ford and the favorite James Bond of all time. This is a perfect movie. The script, the casting, the acting, it all fits together perfectly. One MINOR mistake was, when Marion hit Indy with the mirror and he screamed, they forgot to put in the sound of a boat horn. This was supposed to block out the scream so Marion wouldn't hear it, which is why she said, "what did you say?" Without it, she DEFINITELY would have heard him. But a minor quibble. It's just so great. Thanks for the video!

I remember seeing this in the theater, I think 5, or 6 times. Yes, Satipo is Alfred Molina aka Doc Ock. The horrible thing that most don't put together was that 10 years ago, Indy had a falling out with Dr. Ravenwood. We learn later that it was over Marion. Marion is 24 in the movie... Makes it a bit creepy, given her comment that she was "...just a child. [She] was in LOVE!" In 2008, her age was retconned to 27. BTW, $5,000 for the medallion would be $110,000 in today's money.

A bit of trivia: The scene where Indy faces the big guy with the huge sword was supposed to be a protracted fight. Unfortunately Harrison Ford was really sick with the flu the day they were to shoot the scene so when the guy starts whipping his huge sword around, Indy looks at him as if to say, “Yeah, right.” Then he shoots him dead. Spielberg decided to go with that take and the rest is cinematic history.

I saw this in the theater as a kid and there was another movie about the same time called "In Search of Historic Jesus Christ" and it talked about the pursuit to find another such ark that contained the burial shrouds of Jesus. I think they held up as well as the Ten Commandments and were reduced to "sand" as well. As a kid in the 80's I heard about the Spear of Destiny and other artifacts like these, and my take was governments traveling the world to find magical items of historical and religious significance to help them rule the world. Thanks to the Indiana Jones movies, I walked away with a great deal of skepticism for magic, religion AND governments.

I was either 16 or 17 when my older brother and I saw this in the theater. It was quite the journey. This is the one I have watched the most, but I only needed to watch The Crystal Skull once to know it wasn't my cup of tea. I haven't been to Disney World since '82. I think Space Mountain was their biggest, scariest ride back then. It always blows my mind to think of all the time that has gone by. 🍿😊

I have had a lot of practice in heels, including years of Ballet that had me spending hours every day en pointe. That is the forced position of walking on the ends of your toes! That helps me be able to run very easily in all of my heels, including my collection of 7 inch Ballet heels! I can also stand and or walk in my Ballet heels or my Ponygirl boots for several hours at a time while I am hooked up to my Ponygirl cart. That makes it impossible to fall or sit! 👗👗👠👠❤❤👱‍♀👱‍♀

I remember thinking, when I saw this in 1981, that you could argue that Indiana rescued Marion from Major Arnold Ernst Toht but otherwise the main outcome would have been pretty much the same, the Nazi’s would have opened the Arc and all who witnessed it would have suffered the same fate, however, aster I reflected on this I realised that the Arc might then have remained in the possession of the Nazi’s so that they could continue to research ways of exploiting it. I recently saw a clip from The Bing Bang Theory where they distraught to hear that Indiana Jones was superfluous to the outcome of the movie. Only 40 years late in working that one out 😂

Thank you for sharing the fun you had watching Raiders of the Lost Ark. Here's a funny thing--I had trouble with my willing suspension of disbelief over small things such as the wrong pistols and rifles and the presence of uniformed "Afrika Korps" soldiers in pre-WW2 Egypt (then part of the British Empire) but was okay with the supernatural effects of the Ark. That's like gulping down a boulder but gagging on grains of sand. The movie was strong enough to overcome my disbelief and I enjoyed watching it anyway.

When the ride at Disneyland first opened I wasn’t tall enough (they measured you up to the snake) now I’m 6’5” 😂 I had an Indy birthday party when I was 10, and recently I decided I need one of the real hats that they make custom in the UK (as soon as I have $600 to spare 😬) and just like you Last Crusade was the one I watched the most (but my older sister got me a vhs of Temple of Doom when I was 4 and I wore that out too) gosh I love this trilogy ❤

Fun fact: the scene where Indy shoots the sword guy was supposed to be a full fight scene. However, Ford had really bad food poisoning that day(you can even see how shitty he was feeling by the close ups during the scene) so it was shortened. Also, yes Satipo was indeed played by Alfred Molina aka Doc Ock from Spiderman 2(I believe this was his first role ever).

I saw this at the movies after I graduated college. Awesome film. Although, as the Big Bang Theory episode pointed out, Indy changed nothing. The outcome would have been exactly the same if Indy had just stayed teaching classes.

In the original script Marian was a teenager and Indy was in his early 20s, which explains a lot of the animosity between them ("I was a child!"). But eventually Lucas and Spielberg it was problematic to make their hero guilty of statutory rape, so they shifted the ages in the backstory so they were both legal age when they were involved. The novelization of the film was based on the original script and says that Marion was 15 when she started her relationship with Indy.
