I didn't get to watch this game live because I was scheduled to work delivering pizzas for Mad Mushroom. I was stuck in traffic on Walnut in front of Sports when the game ended, and it was like the city just exploded. People came running out of every building running and screaming through the streets and hugging and giving everyone high fives. It took me more than 30 minutes to make it two blocks back to the store where I promptly quit and went back out to be with my people.

I'm so glad I finally got to see the actual footage from the game for the first time. I was in basic training during that time and remember reading the letter from my mom telling me they had won and sent me the newspaper clipping. I just stood there motionless scanning over the letter and the box score, I seriously couldn't believe it. An IU fan my entire life, I really wished I had got to see this game live.

@bryzngani No, you wish you could have seen the second half of this game live. The Hoosiers came out awful to open, waaaayyy too many turnovers. I remember going to bed before the second half began (I was only 11), thinking that the Hoosiers were going home. I also remember hearing my brothers and my dad screaming at the TV when Fife fouled Williams on the three. Then I heard my brother screaming "Elite Eight! Elite Eight!" and jumping around. I was so elated to hear that IU had won.

@EricAKATheBelgianGuy No it is relevant IU has a good team and will make a lot of noise this college year . They will be a tough out for my Cats and if they dont play well they will go down. I dont know the players name but that was a great past halph court shot by the IU player last night.
@toddky3214 жыл бұрын
@EricAKATheBelgianGuy I hope so Eric , I have respect for Tom Creane as well even though he beat my Cats in the 03 regional final lol Unfortunately Kelvin Sampson did to IU what Eddie Sutton did to us but Creane is already in track. I would love too see IU sneak into the big dance but your probably right still the NIT would be a great accomplishment. The rivalry will be renewd you have to good of a coach.

Always? Hang on there. Duke has achieved more since Coach K's arrival in 1980 than IU has. It's true. But in 1980, we already had three national championships, the latest one coming under none other than K's mentor - the General, Robert Montgomery Knight. Speaking of Knight, I thank him for what he did for us. It put IU on the map forever. But frankly, even if he hadn't been fired, I think he still would've retired before now. It would've been time for a change. I'm just fine with Coach Crean.

@pgraybengal. Now if we done whining about the refs on the flipside talking about this game unbias and all that it was a great upset and a great game. Pause at 1:07 and compare the starting lineups....Duke's whole starting lineup is in NBA now (I count Jayson Williams because if not for motorcycle accident he would still be in the NBA). IU starting lineup outside of Jeffires is a bunch of farm boys. Honestly many of the bench players IU had were better than their starters.
@qualitycontrol991111 жыл бұрын
One of the toughest Duke losses.....but a microcosm of our season. We lost @UVA the same way late in the season, primarily for the same reason.....reluctance to keep feeding the ball to Boozer as option #1 late in the game. A promise MK made in the wake of '01 title but could not keep. I also thought Dunleavy got worn down playing the 4 that year. Maryland was the best team that year, I will say that.
@qualitycontrol991111 жыл бұрын
I also remember Jay Will missing a breakaway dunk in this game. I think it helped start the rally by IU. We were probably the 3rd best team that year behind UMD and KU.
@gaucoin139 жыл бұрын
Easily one of the worst moments in sports for me. Put the best free-throw shooter in the country on the line, he misses, two more missed rebounds later and Duke lose. How Boozer didn't put it in to this day I will never understand. I died a little that day.

I was at the game in my candy striped pants with my Mom when I was 12. As soon as Jay Will got fouled I turned to her and said "he only shoots 65%" from the line. Weird but one of my most vivid memories from the game.

@qualitycontrol991111 жыл бұрын
News flash.....Perennial favorites tend to get the calls in every sport (at least the ones I watch). Dean Smith got them when he was the preeminent coach in CBB. So did Pitino at UK. MJ, Kobe and Phil Jackson damn sure got 'em. Can't leave out good old Bobby Bowden. So does Brady and Belichick, as do Lebron and Wade's Heat. It's entertainment first and sports a distant second. I thought the 90's cowboys did also (to a lesser degree). I've seen the refs screw Duke and save them, and while I am biased in favor of Duke, I hate to see any team get singled out this way without acknowledging the entire product for what it is.
