The Spaniards found sulphur in what is now known as Sulphur Springs (about 2 miles east of the intersection of NM4, NM126 at La Quava, New Mexico approx. 15 miles from the village of Jemez Springs). Today there is a sulphur hot spring at the sight of the mine at Sulphur Springs.
