"the rig veda is very clearly a patriarchal, male dominated scripture" (10:01). . .Usha has only 21 hymns out of a thousand hymns (10:20). in speaking of male domination, is it not ironic that a conversation to increase female representation is conducted by two men!? it's the same 'unconscious bias' that has led to the exclusion of women from public spaces for the millennia before being discussed: men just see other men as the 'most qualified' - even when the subject is women! "oh well, he's the best person to represent this area"; amazing! on a much more tender, personal note, I wish that men could see how it can take years, decades, a lifetime as a woman to feel good enough, confident enough to take up even a little space, and how deeply we are conditioned to defer to male authority, to 'make nice'/ be pleasing to men, to shrink ourselves, and to distrust our own voices. I wish men could get even a glimpse of what it's like to function every day - as a woman - in a world made for, by and about men; how we encounter patriarchy at every turn, and how emotionally TIRING it is to either challenge, ignore or put up with it, in (almost) every space we enter! THIS, along with male entitlement, is why male domination remains entrenched in (almost) every space, including spaces like this that are ostensibly about increasing the visibility of women's expereinces, and supposedly about amplifying women's voices (without any women present in the conversation)! SO painful, and sadly, all too familiar!!! if 'the medium is the message' then sadly the message of this video that is most potently conveyed is that 'male voices/ people matter most' and 'women don't need to be seen or heard, men can speak for them and that's just fine'! sigh!!
