I think most of us in the US are so friendly to foreign visitors because we genuinely want your visit to be enjoyable. You have traveled, most likely at great expense to get here, and we want you to see the best of what we have to offer and enjoy your time. That's my opinion anyway. So I grew up in the 1970s. Let me tell you the US was filthy, I remember. Funny thing though. We actually realized our county was filthy. So literally we all worked together. “You Gotta Pitch in to Clean up America.”it was literally a national campaign and it worked, we cleaned it up together we cleaned it up. We do not litter or throw trash on the streets, obviously there are some exceptions, but those are just that exceptions. In general we try to keep our land clean.

I grew up in the 80s we had the "it's enough to make you cry, isn't it enough to make you stop?" commercials and such as well as "Don't mess with Texas" litter commercials.

@@ohslimgoodywhere you born in the 1960s and lived through the 70s. Not sure where you lived, but I’ll bet is was not Cleveland when the Cuyahoga River caught on fire. The river caught on fire! From pollution! Now tell us again how the entire United States was a pristine paradise with no trash or blemishes. If is was clean where you were, it was the exception, possibly.

Well, we do have some areas you wouldn't want to walk across a beach without shoes on. My neighbors LOVE to litter; and I generally have to pick up the trash they toss out each night. I live in a rural area; so I know who they are. :p I remember growing up there was a mantra 'Keep America Clean'; and there were laws to deal with litterbugs; but I don't know if they are still enforced. Back in the 80's we had to have a coin to get into the bathroom stalls. Haven't seen a pay toilet in awhile; but they do keep them locked, so you have to ask for the key. LOL And yeah, we do like to strike up conversations with 'strangers'. Granddaddy long legs are beneficial spiders, so we leave them alone, not so much my cats, they LOVE eating those spiders. Lost Across the Pond needs to spend some quality time in the state of Virginia. LOL

I think you are totally right, rural people anywhere have more in common, just as city people anywhere. What is odd about the US is the large amount of low population density available.

Part of India’s litter problem is population density… part of it is waste management infrastructure… in America they literally ran advertisements on our tvs to teach the general public not to litter. But in major cities , it does become a problem again…

But, tbh, at least in Ohio, but really I've been to more states than I have not been to, most cities are quite clean too. Granted, there are areas where that is not the case, but most of the more 'well traveled' areas.... not so much. also, another possible factor we have laws against littering.

@@ktkacer1039 most litter issues come down to the number of people vs the government funding to clean up after those people. The US ran commercials in the 70s and 80s specifically designed to teach the general public not to just toss their trash wherever. So , it eventually got ingrained in the public consciousness “ just don’t do it” . Other places in the world lack both the infrastructure to do the cleaning and the PSA to teach everyone not to.

I think the perception of American warmth is a product of genuine childlike curiosity. Growing up in a American schools, it is a social pastime to compare each other's past. Everyone has a different story. We're not all Catholic, or Italian, or German, etc. Kids are naturally going to be curious we we look different but talk the same, so we form a habit of curiosity into our adulthood. Also, I we are raised with the emphasis on the value of the individual and personal initiative. What makes you you.

I grew up in a rural area about 45 miles from Los Angeles and everybody was always friendly neighbors everybody however when the people from LA started moving into her and it started become a big city then it was less common and so now we have areas here that are rather kind of slummy the people there are not very nice and the rural area that I’m living in now I want to see folks are moved in and they’re not so friendly so I think it varies around the United States there’s lotta different factors

We are an outgoing bunch in the US. We are a melting pot, and most of us love other cultures and people, especially people visiting our country. Not everyone, of course, but the majority for certain.

My area has had a large in flux of people from Southern India. The ideas of laws against littering was very surprising to many. Often I see children reminding their parents. It is just a cultural difference.

We are teach our kids to put trash in the trash can when they are toddlers, I don’t know how many times I had to get my keys out of the trash 😆..also we get a heavy fine for littering…Indian people are so family oriented ❤every country has issues!

You can teach people to put trash in trash cans, but you need a system to collect it, and bring it to landfills..If there is no organized waste collections, and dump sites, putting trash in trash cans will not take care of the problem.

People do liter alot, theres non profit organizations that get together and clean the beaches all ages can go. Ive done it with my kids. South beach in miami after spring break is nasty the locals go out n clean the beaches the tourist destroy it in 1 weekend. But when everyone is gone after there vacation is over there is a big mess and us locals clean it up again n again lol

It depends on where you go, most places are clean but some areas you can finds littered and cluttered areas.

I can't believe there are some places in the world make you pay to take a piss or a shit. That absolutely blows my mind. If I need to take a piss or a shit, I'm going to take a piss or a shit. Lots of cities in the US once had pay per use bathrooms and there are number of locations in NYC that still do charge. They started to gradually fade in the 70's, 80's & 90's
