One that you may want to watch is the final scene of Blackadder Goes Forth. There were a number of veterans who were worried how it would end and if it would be disrespectful or not. I really enjoy watching you guys & your reactions. You understand the British style of humour which is often taking the mickey out of ourselves & showing each of the characters to be failures. This is why the characters playing the Indian roles in ‘It Ain’t Half Hot Mum’ are probably the funniest. Best wishes to you both

Blackadder was caught in a Catch 22. In order to get out of the war and not be killed he had to prove he was mad. But by wanting to be safe it proved he was not mad. Hence the catch, you had to be mad to fight in a war but you couldn't prove you were mad, you could only prove you were sane by trying to get out. The underwear and pencils were suggested to him by a General as a way of showing he was insane. As he later says "Who is going to notice another madman around here?"

3:43 SPOILER WARNING: (Captain) Edmund Blackadder („the Fourth“, a professional soldier ever since the British campaign in the Sudan in the late 1880s / early 1890s) had, at the beginning of the episode, received the orders to „go over the top“ in an offensive against the Germans during the trench warfare when „going over the top“, crossing „no-man’s land“ under fire from the opposing trenches with machine guns etc. meant almost certain death. Because of this, he tried to be declared insane in order to be sent back to Britain. This doesn’t work though, because an inspection of his sanity begins pretty much with his superior officer telling someone else just outside the bunker that „another thing they tried to do in the Sudan was to put their pants on their heads and stick pencils up their noses and pretend to be insane - I had to order several men to be shot for this today already…“, which leads to Blackadder, on hearing it, telling Private Baldrick (the „Ostrich“-guy) that „And that’s ANOTHER thing they used to do in the Sudan - so, don’t ever let me catch you doing it, or I WILL have you shot!“ (quotes from memory)

Actually they are pencils up his nose, not sticks or knitting needles. Many reactors have watched all the episodes from Blackadder. you guys should do the same. you will get the context and piss yourselves laughing.

Sadly, the pants/sticks "going mad" trick didn't work. In the final episode Black Adder points out, "who would notice another mad man around here" highlighting the insanity of both the situation and everyone involved.
