I believe one of the reasons he chose to use just iron sights and not a scope was that the lens on a scope can reflect sunlight and give away his position. So it would seem like he was at a disadvantage when really his opponents, at least the other snipers he faced, were giving themselves away.

That and i thinh the shooting distances arent in hundred meters if forest often.

He also had wider view of the area so he did not need to refocus scope after every shot. Just pick the next one on the row, line, whatever.

Actually the real number might have been as much as 800 kills. He took down with machine guns many too, sniped over 500.
