This movie is based on a comic book that was inspired by the true events at the Battle of Thermopylae. Leonidas and his 300 Spartans led a combined Greek force to stop the invasion by Xerxes and the Persian Empire. A man named Ephialtes did betray the Greeks and told the Persians about a mountain pass that they later used to outflank the Greek forces.

The reason some of the Persians look grotesque & monstrous is not only because this is based on a comic (graphic novel), but also because this movie is a story being told by Dilios to the Spartan troops. So just like with any story, there are embellishments to make the story more fantastical.

Spartan woman didn't wail when their sons entered the Agoge at 7 (military training), they celebrated it. The Agoge was required for all Spartan men. Spartans were pure warriors. Their slaves did the labor. The famous "With your shield or on it" line was from a Spartan mother to her son. Your rite of passage out of the Agoge at 18 was not killing a wolf, it was strangling a helot (slave) to death and not get caught. The only people in Sparta who got grave stones were men who died in battle and women who died in the birthing bed. Sparta was as about as extreme as it gets and still be remotely functional.

@@nysus3530 One of my favorite stories about this was during the Olympics. An old man was wading through the crowds looking for a seat but no man from the other city-states gave way, all except the Spartans - both younger and much older - all stood-up as one and allowed the old man to sit with them. The crowd applauded and the old man turned to them with a sigh, saying "All Greeks know what is right, but only the Spartans do it."

They loved the elderly but old men did not get graves, as mentioned above you had to die in battle serving the country as man, or while birthing as woman. And army companies were like small clubs with membership by invitation only. Which meant you had to show bravery and skill in combat to get an invite to the more reknown ones who would obviously see more action therefore more chances and as combat above a certain age was not physically feasible the vets were fighting the strongest to earn that gravestone before the age robbed them of more chances. Is what he meant in the movie about a beautiful death.

The quotes about "Fighting in the shade" and "Tonight we dine in hell"(or Hades) are actually historical quotes from this battle in real life, as were some others (like "Return with your shield or on it"). This was a real campaign, and in the West the "300 Spartans" at Thermopylae fighting the Persians to the death are legendary. The follow up defeat of the Persians is also factual. While this is a somewhat mythologized version from the Greek perspective, it is very well grounded in fact.
@Mr.Ekshin
@Mr.Ekshin 2 жыл бұрын
It's not as much "mythologized" as it is narrated by a good story teller who was jazzing up the tale to make it more epic. The entire story (as we experience it), was being told to the troops in Marathon to hype them up before the battle. What we see on screen is NOT what supposedly happened at Thermopylae, but what the troops saw in their imaginations as they listened to the story being told. Arrows blotting out the sun is a great euphemism, and the soldiers would see exactly that in their imaginations. When being told of the 'immortals', they imagined half-man, half-beast ghouls. When told of great beasts from all across the world, they imagined absolutely huge and fierce creatures. Not understanding black-powder made the grenades into "magic". And imagining Xerxes as some imposing, 8 foot tall god-king that dwarfed all others in his presence was of course, part of the fun.

Alas it doesn't matter how special your special forces are, in a big war, numbers count and the Spartans had been bigoted pricks for decades. The slaves outnumbered them 10 to 1, at some point the Hoplites were going to change sides. Hence why the greater Greece ate them. Sure they were the first professional soldiers, but they were also a bunch a bigoted slave owners.

When you said that you're a Sikh, I immediately thought of the battle of Saragarhi which the movie you mentioned, "Kasari," (also transliterated as "Kesari" or "Keshari" for people who want to look it up), is based on. The Spartans' tactic of using the choke point at Thermopylae to diminish Xerxes' ability to use his numerical advantage reminds me of how Sepoy Gurmukh Singh made his last stand where a narrow entrance only allowed the Afghans to enter one of two at a time, enabling him to kill approximately 20-40 of them before they decided to set fire to the structure to kill him.

Damn, what a boss. That reminds me of a similar tale of the Battle of Stamford Bridge where this single axeman (name unknown) cut down up to 40 Englishmen and was defeated only when an English soldier floated under the bridge in a half-barrel and thrust his spear through the planks in the bridge. That is the tale anyways, I would assume the Englishmen had actually just crossed the river and came up behind him while the vanguard continued to fight him. Whether or not it really happened is up for debate but we do know that throughout history many cultures have tales of legendary warriors. These guys might not have been academics but they were definitely genius' on the field of battle.

The numbers in the battle are VASTLY mis-stated on both sides in this movie, but even the reality is STAGGERING. Leonidas led a force of approximately 7,000 men against the invading Persuan force, which historians number somewhere between 120,000 to 300,000. Leonidas dismissed the majority of his forces before the real battle began, leaving approximately 1,900 men under his command. Even at the most generous estimate, that means 1,900 men held off 120,000 opposing soldiers for 3 days. At the most generous odds, that is still one of the most impressive goal-line defenses in the history of mankind.

Some of what you see in the movie is historically accurate. Spartan boys began military training at age 7. At approximately 13 years old they faced their testament to their training; being released into the wild and surviving. Children that were born with deformities were discarded because Spartan society viewed deformities as weaknesses. The reason why the specialized Persian force called "Immortals" earned their name was because of their numbers, which seemed infinite vs Leonidas and his 300 men. Despite the odds appearing against him, Leonidas and his 300 Spartans impressively took about 70,000 Persians down with them, which was roughly a quarter of the invading Persian army of about 300,000. This was accomplished from Leonidas positioning him and his men in a narrow pass so Persians could funnel themselves in like meat to the grinder. And of course there was the phalanx military maneuver. So despite Leonidas and his 300 being defeated in the film in the end, he proved to Xerxes that self-proclaimed God's are fools and jokes, and that numbers don't mean as much as one thinks. I did two papers on the Battle of Thermopylae in my early college years. Still my most favorite and fascinating historic battle ever. I hope you watch the mid-quel Rise of an Empire as that takes place during 300. Like 300, it also has a few historical accuracies.

One reason they called them immortals, is because of how they dressed and stylized their armor. Whenever one died another exact looking warrior would take his place so in that sense they all looked similar to eachother. So many soldiers and warriors while fighting the Persian empire think they'd kill an immortal (they did) but another one would pop right up to fight next and it would throw the warrior off guard like "I thought I just killed you!? What. Are you immortal?" Wild psychology used by the Persians. But at the end of the day. Psychology with no matter how many forces can't overcome a perfect strat. The Romans proved that to the Greeks after this war and used their battle strats they learned from greece to take all of Europe.

There's a lot to understand about the Spartan culture. The Spartans trained to become warriors from the age of 7 to the age of 29. So these men.were as tough as you can imagine. They were a warrior state. They valued the Spartan training so much that when the boys from age 7 were wiped the parents would tell them not to pass out. The lines Come back with this shield or on it. Was told to every Spartan warrior. Meaning come back victorious or dead. The only Spartans who had graves that were marked with their names were Warriors who died in battle and Spartan women who died in childbirth. Both were looked at as giving their lives for Sparta. The other lines "come get them" and "we will fight in the shade" are recorded from the historical accounts of the battle. The "May you live forever" was an insult for a Spartan.

THe immortals were a real force. They were the Persian kings personal guard and elite troops. They were called the immortals because they dressed the same and wore masks to look identical and there were so many of them that when one died, another took his place. It was like killing the same person over and over again.

In real life a Spartan boy didn't kill a wolf, they strangled a slave. The Spartans were really religious, and there was no non-military Spartans. Spartan women were considered the most beautiful in Greece. Most of the best lines in this movie are from history. This movie was based off a comic book. That's where all the scary stuff came from. But Sparta and the Greeks did drive the Persian empire back. This movie kicks so much ass.

Spartan women we're considered very beautiful because they were all very fit, that's because they were also trained Hoplites, the equal of any normal male Hoplite. their military traditions even extended to the women.

Alright, I am stopping this from the very beginning... I am from the Balkans and I know Greek history. The battle happened, true, but the thing that bothers me most in this movie is that the REAL Spartans were HEAVY infantry... covered with armour... This movie is based on a comic, but why the HELL are these dudes going into battle in a perizoma?!?! Still, the movie is fun, let's see your reaction.

The reason they were called the Immortals is because the ranks were replenished as the ranks fell so it gave the illusion that they were immortal.

Let's start from the fact that the movie is taken from a comic book...of course the Spartans were trained from the age of 7 and finished their training at 18...and for their whole life they were soldiers...of course they didn't wear a tunic and an underwear but complete armour...they were considered the best fighters in the world...with weapons very contemporary in relation to the Persians' mats and talin clothes...their formation was called phalanx and was considered the armored of the time...later it evolved from the Macedonian Greeks and the Romans...Sparta was always ruled by two kings...when one was fighting...the other was ruling...they were forbidden to take part in war for the duration of the Karneas...each Spartan was followed by his helot slave who was also fighting... in the battle of Thermopylae no horses or other animals were used due to the narrowness of the passage... until Leonidas came into contact with Xerxes... in general the movie moved in emotional contexts and not in reality... the oracle said that in order to save Sparta and Greece... its king had to be sacrificed...when information arrived that the Persians with the help of Ephialtes were encircling the Greeks...Leonidas gave the order to leave for their cities and they were left alone to face the Persians....only 1100 Thespians refused...well in total in the end there were 1700 Pochemists who sacrificed themselves...two phrases are known..."return with the shield or on it"...since that is how they honored the dead...and...then take...where means come and get it if you dare....thanks

Some of the dialogue was authentic from Spartan/Greek history and the battle Thermopylae (Hot Gates) in 480 BC. "Our arrows will blot out the sun." "Then we will fight in the shade." "May you live forever." As a curse. "Spartans: lay down your weapons!" "Persians: Come and get them"...written as "Molon Labe," or "come and take it!" Which are mottos adopted by modern militaries. Greek Tragedies always end in, well Tragedy!

@@thorkagemob1297 I can see how that appears as if I wrote: Spartans: "Lay down your weapons." Persians: "Come and get them." Perhaps for clarity I should have written: Persians: "Spartans, lay down your weapons." and Spartans: "Persians, come and get them." Thanks for the heads-up.

The way Spartan Culture worked is that every male citizen in Sparta was required to serve in the military and that dictated the rhythm of everyday life for an average citizen. They considered service in the military as a privilege rather than duty. It was part of their political identity equivalent to their attendance in the Assembly. Interestingly, other than Spartans, none of the Greeks from other city-states were professional soldiers In Sparta there was a hierarchy even in the genders that transcended royalty, nobility, peasantry and slavery and this was the first defining mark of all men in Sparta Spartan society was divided into three main groups: the complete citizens, the Helots or slaves, and the Perioeci, who were neither slaves nor citizens but worked as craftsmen, traders, or built weapons for the citizens. Spartan culture by todays standards was cruel, harsh and unrelenting, but for the time it was a necessity and produced the most elite troops the world had ever seen, even by todays standards. But at the same time Spartan culture was very sophisticated and could be said in some regards superior to modern day standards, some nations have similar styles but none today, even dictatorships have ever come close to a modern variant of a Spartan Culture The training faced By spartan men was harsh and could lead to death but it was nothing but the absolute most practical ways to teach survival, to fight and to kill The Spartan II's from the Halo games are inspired by the Spartans of Ancient Greece and if you read the first Halo book that details the training you will see that its practical to make peak soldiers but the toll it takes can be harsh for those who know The numbers that actually took place in this battle historically are hotly disputed by historians due to the number that history reported, there are many who do not believe that the Spartan 300 could have fought against an army of 1 million men, and so they downplay the numbers. the argument against this is that we know how the Spartans trained roughly and how they kindo off lived, but we do not know exactly how effective they actually were in war. Personally i feel that considering how we know how feared the Spartans were not just by nations of Greece but nations of the Ancient world and how respected they were as worriers despite their small size should give an idea as to how fearsome they were. Fun Fact 1 : At the height of the Persian empire, within its border it half around 50% of the world current population. Fun Fact 2: Spartans were so renown in the Ancient world that they were recruited into many armies either as mercenaries of high standing or as soldiers, Spartans were part of Alexander the Greats army that marched on the world. After Sparta Fell to the Roman Empire they also served within the Roman Military as an Elite Unit that even with different training to the Romans could march and fight together and was considered superior despite fewer numbers overall. I think I remember reading a quote from a Roman General: "Oh, we have Spartans coming? Well I think the war will be over before we get to march tomorrow." Fun Fact 3: Even after the Roman Empire went to war and won against Sparta, they respected them so highly that Sparta was exempt from Tax to the Empire and was given special permission to continue its traditions including the military training. Sparta became a popular tourist attraction in the Empire and the Romans admired Spartan discipline to an incredible degree, and came in droves to watch the Agôgê in action.
