In this episode, host Dev Goswami and defence expert Shiv Aroor delve into India's nuclear submarine program, discussing its limited fleet despite a vast coastline of 6700 km. Why does a country with such a significant maritime border suffer from "sea blindness"? The Indian Navy, the smallest among the three-armed forces, seems disproportionally under-equipped given the strategic importance of its maritime domain. So, what factors contributed to this stagnation?
India currently boasts only two nuclear submarines, INS Arihant and INS Arighat. But what sets nuclear submarines apart from their conventional and diesel-electric counterparts?
Consider this a masterclass on the SSBNs (nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarines) and SSNs (nuclear-powered attack submarines). In February 2015, the Indian government approved the indigenous construction of six SSNs at the Ship Building Center in Visakhapatnam. But we have yet to hear much about these projects since then. The absence of a nuclear-powered attack submarine in India's fleet has significant strategic implications. Why hasn't India yet commissioned one despite the urgency?

Excuses. Do you know when the same US had GDP of 3 trillion they built 40 Nuclear Submarines in 7 years in 1960s . That's how Nations who have self respect act in a manner not like Cowardice slave India . Be ready to be Chinese Ghulam again . If Indian military really loved their motherland they would have taken over the political theatre and made the country extremely militarized and powerful nation. India is a country which has Cowardice population, absolutely useless politician, garbage bureaucrats and a shameless corrupt military.

Thanks a lot for the excellent presentation. The IAI Harop is a loitering munition developed by Israel might have reduced causality. Without air support, it is impossible to eliminate the enemy occupying a higher altitude. "The Harop was publicly unveiled to the world for the first time in India, in the lead-up to the Aero India 2009 show.[6] In February 2019, the Indian Air Force decided to add another 54 Harop drones to its fleet of around 110 of these drones, which they had renamed P-4." So the Govt. has taken action.

This is in connection with an earlier podcast. Shiv, You mentioned in your podcast on ballistic missiles that we have thousands of them and the capability to manufacture more of them in large numbers of high quality with 99.9% strike rate accuracy etc. Well I just came across a thought process in the CSIS on National security that they would prefer acquisition of long range missiles SM 6, SM 3, as the set up is complex and expensive to build. Allies are preferred for such acquisition. Is there something to explore in this area?

@ShivAroor and @DevGoswami, for a country with a long coastline along the Indian peninsula as well as quite a few outlying islands including A&N, we seem to be lacking and definitely not talking about creating a serious tri-service 'Marine Expeditionary Force' capability with serious troop transportation, amphibious assault, landing and sustaining capabilities as part of the Peninsular theater. We will need this capability to protect the main coastline as well as the far flung islands. The A&N tri-service command seems to have some limited capabilities in that regard, but it will need backup and relief from a MEF from mainland, if it comes under pressure in any serious way as it is separated from the mainland logistically. Even compared to some south east asian nations, we seem to be lacking good well protected LSTs, LCUs and Amph Assault Vehicles, in numbers that match our coastline requirements, just as an example. Can you guys talk about that?

Although nuclear weapons are usually associated with SSBNs (US, RU, CN, FR and UK); IL is suspected of being able launch them from their AIP-powered Dakar class, through purpose-built horizontal tubes. North Korea is adopting the formula the USSR used in its first models, fit up to three using the conning tower, as the missile is larger than the hull, propulsion is also diesel.

Can you make an episode on India's lack of urgency regarding electronic warfare and surveillance capabilities? We have very few number of AWACS, whereas even Pakistan outnumbers us in this regard. With only 30 squadrons of fighter aircraft, more AWACS are desperately needed to see deep inside enemy territory and direct our limited air assets wherever needed. We need to remember how UK won the battle of Britain despite having a limited number of Spitfires and Hurricanes against formidable numbers of Luftwaffe assets. All because they had a good radar system that detected incoming German aircraft and were able to vector fighters accordingly.

Small quibble with the notion that India has been Sea blind. The north of India is land locked, boxed in by the Vindhyas in the south. So, North Indians are Sea blind. South India has had a robust naval presence for a long time with maritime conquests in other land masses. Since independence, when India became one country, the center has had people from the North who have (justifiably) been wary of land invasions. Also adding to the equation, the British recruited Indians to an Army because they did not have their own in the subcontinent but were content to run their navy themselves. Now, as the southern states flex their economic muscle, the Navy will get a lot more attention.

I would say because they only exist in the US Navy, and are an afterthought of reconverting an SSBN that has been replaced by a newer class, and using them as a conventional missile transport truck. So, its like a boomer but with less bang; usually housing 4 conventional missiles (eg Tomahaws) in each ballistic tube. This is a concept also being explored in air power too.

What Modi Ji is doing making our defense forces self-reliant. It means, we will have setbacks for a decade or two but in the long run, we will develop the technology that will help us not only secure our nation and it's strategic interests but also give leeway for future political leadership of the nation to formulate foreign and national security policies without having to worry about foreign pressure. Modi ji is doing the right thing and future generations in India will be thankful for it.

Even when it comes to power projection the Indian navy's aircraft carriers are a joke. They are not big enough to pose a threat to Pakistan, the country which we usually have to fight a war against. The navy actually hid the original vikrant in the Andaman islands during the 71 war because they were terrified that the Pakistani submarine which was hunting for it would find it and sink it, and that would be a humiliation for the navy as well as the country. And it was only after the Pakistani submarine was sunk did they remove the vikrant from it's hiding and use it's aircraft to bomb chittagong, which was totally unnecessary because the IAF had already achieved total air superiority over the E Pakistan airspace. And even today the Indian navy dare not use a aircraft carrier against Pakistan, because unless the IAF provides it with air cover the paf will attack that juicy target and sink it. So who else is the navy going to " project power " against? Sri Lanka. Maldives or Bangladesh? We are not the USA. Even the UK realized that they have committed a great blunder by ordering and building 2 aircraft carrier's, because they cannot afford them, but our navy insists on more aircraft carrier's and is not interested in submarines, especially SSNs because according to them they are not as sexy and glamorous as a aircraft carrier.

36:29 is breaking point for me. Why this promotion inserted in such a good podcast. There is nothing Indian about it. Podcaster have very limited knowledge about submarine and weapon in it or against it. He is right only in one part that Indian navy (diesel operated) has very less submarine. He said 15 but it's only 8. War winning submarine are Diesal operated submarines. Any way I will never see this podcast in future due to 36:29 crap.

I am a bit amused to hear this podcast. Figures being thrown around randomly - 45 boats - where has this number appeared from ? Perhaps a little research like remembering the Chief's name whom he met less than a month ago or the actual issues related to submarines, their design, construction, roles and capability would have helped. In trying to be cool and conversational, one should avoid becoming flippant.

shiv is always good with his english but his answers lack depth & his response is always same 'lackadaisical approach'.. bhai AF k jets ka pucho tab bhi ye hi... Navy ka pucho tab bhi ye hi.. army ka pucho fir same.. by deisgn SSKs are more stealthy under the water than SSNs as SSKs don't have dynamic part other than electric motor & propeller which is powered by batteries.. whereas in SSNs your nuclear reaction which power turbine to generate electricity or mechanical power has certain amount of sound signals.. but SSNs advantage is at certain depth it can cross ocean without noticed by patrol aircrafts.. which SSK can't as it had to snorkel to run diesel engine.. we didn't got 9 of SSKs from P75 because it was believed that DRDO's AIP would be ready when L&T would be fabricating 4th Kalvari class & additional 3 or 6 would ordered later.. 9 SSKs of P75I didn't happen because the amount of TOT (Know how this time not just fabrication that happened in case of P75) wasn't agreed by foreign vendors & also navy wanted Submarine which has operational AIP, Navy could figure out the operational logs of those & the real capability of AIP which is usually less then advertised.. also it's navy also to be blamed as they wanted AIP design only for this.. but in reality Japanese & korean sub with lithium battery are almost on par with AIP equipped sub of that era.. now most frightening condition of navy would be in 5 years when paki will have latest 8 SSKs from china equipped with AIP doing patrols in eastern as well as western boards & chinese SSNs lurking in middle & southern IOR.. ideally we should have dealt with french for SSNs to get atleast 12 of those but this government is more on making announcement & actually dealing with irregularities of lost decade of UPA toward our militaries laggards

All it did was buy things from Russia and take commissions out of it for parry funds or self-enrichment. Only after Modi became PM, we started planning for future defense requirements. The six decades after independence was a wasted opportunity, by Khangress.
