He has great domain knowledge. He is polite and , rightly, sort of impolite with trouble creator neighbours and "advisors" in NATO. PM Modi would have seen his performance as FS and also noted that he is son of a great strategist and expert in Defence. His father was candid and would not mince words. He was tough vis a vis Air Commodore late Jasjit Singh. Both were great Defence strategists. Dr Jai has responsibility not in goody goody Non Aligned body but in G 20, QUAD, SCO, I2U2 , Chinese border, Import of Petroleum, keeping the Rupee healthy. In my memory (without Google or its competitor) no EAM was having Doctorate. He looks polite but like his father uses sticks leaving the carrot behind when the situation demands. He talked business with Chinese. He plays back channel game in FTAs 2. Beyond FS he was fit as UN Head.
