CG tax is only on the additional value you earn over the money you invested. Say you bought an asset at 10L and sell for 12L. The tax is on 2L. But don't know if it is sold at 9L, we can claim exemption on 1L loss.

One needs to understand that income tax is payable on the income received. Whoever received income is liable to pay tax on that income. Next stage is to know what is the source of that income? Whoever provided the source or investment, he is responsible/ liable to pay tax on income earned from that source. If a flat is bought in wife's name with funds provided by husband, husband is liable to pay tax on income earned from the flat.
