Topographic Wetness Index (TWI): The TWI is a classic index that is used to quantify the effect of topography on hydrological processes (including water logging of soils). It brings out the relatively flat and naturally humid areas due to their position in the watershed.
TWI = ln (a / tan b)
where b is the local slope and a is the area drained by each pixel
With the TWI, the drained area really highlights the pixels at the bottom of the valley, the thalwegs. Thus a valley bottom pixel at an altitude of x will have a large drained area while a bank pixel at an altitude x + 1m will have a much smaller drained area because it will only drain the overhanging slope. These two pixels will therefore have very different values of drained areas despite a very close altitude and a very close slope as well. So the bottom pixel of the valley with its large drained area will have a high topo index while the bank pixel with its low drained area will have a much lower topo index. Finally, only the thalwegs will have a high topo index with this type of method. (georezo.net/forum/viewtopic.p...)
TWI = ln (a / tan b)
(georezo.net/forum/viewtopic.p...)
Let’s start
1- Download DEM or MNT by (See the precedent tutorial)
2- Verify the projection, if the projection of the raster is not in UTM (Universal Transverse Mercator), convert it.
3- Calculate Flow direction(fdir)
4- Calculate flow accumulation(facc)
5- Calculate Slope (DEM)
6- Slope2 = (slope(DEM)*1.570796)/90
7- Tan_slope = con(slope2 inferior to 0, tan(slope2), 0.001)
8- Facc_scaled=(facc+1)*cellsize of raster
9- WTI=ln(facc_scaled/tan_slope)
