This was such a great interview, it’s sad that most of your guest were failed as children. He went through so much as a child it broke me heart to hear his mom hung up on him on Christmas Day. He still smirks when he talks about catching his first case at 13, the driveby, as if there's anything funny about it. You understandably hear his voice catch when she asked about his home life straight out the gate, but he still doesn't have it in him to feel the same sadness for the kid he shot first, for what he did to another family there. That's when he'll be man enough, when he's telling this story and you see him sad FIRST--there's still something in him that thinks it's funny the way he was with the police when they came for him instead of it being a deeply, deeply tragic thing. You can say if you don't laugh you'll cry, better you cry. Cry for them and for yourself. [edit: when they talk about him not doing drugs or alcohol (same thing) again, he's like "If you drop somebody, you gonna have to eat that shit, don't cry now, and I didn't...I walked in there, I knew what I was facing". He keeps on talking about what happened to HIM, how he faced it, how he was conscious of what he'd done and was ready to do the time... as if there is ANYTHING honorable about that. Nothing about his victims and their families, nothing about the people who's lives he's destroyed. There is NOTHING honorable about it just because you're aware of what you've done]. [edit 2: until you won't risk going away not just because of your kids but because you don't want to be that man, you don't get it. You have to unlearn that honor code even when it's all around you. That's when you'll feel the strength of not being a part of that stupid 'face-saving' life; when you know you're a man and not a "biche" ( _his word, not mine_ ) for being able to turn the other cheek.] [edit 3: just love your kids let them be kids, but teach them right from wrong gently, none of this scaring them about how tough life is. They just learn the aggression behind what you're saying, that unfair aggression you had to deal with your whole life, the opposite of what you want them to know. Those lessons you learned are not good, do yourself and them a favor just show them love. Every time you do you will be a stronger man] [edit 4: he is handsome and obviously smart, it's a shame he has all that all over his face. Take up painting man, make some paintings for that art district your business is in, it beats working if you can sell them. And there is indeed honor and pride in surviving what you have been through, the prison system is a disgrace and a stain on the nation, or what we call a society. And then the fact that cons are not given education about real life outside, or support after they get out is a sick and stupid joke. Well done, I was moved by your remarkable story even if I have the reservations above. Stay strong and show your children love (I lost my father when I was 7 and was sent away to boarding school until I was 18, itself a kind of prison, but nothing like what you had to go through. Still, I learned some of the same lessons--if obviously not as harshly. Anyway, I am an old man now and I still miss my Dad. Be there for your kids, love them.)

I Wouldn't Change It For Nothing, It Made Who I Am Today, I'm Humble, And Very Smart, I Was Surprised My IQ Is 107 Reading Is What Kept Me Sane. This is the Bronx, NY. I knew plenty of Chicanos during my 1960s - early 70s Air Force career. We all got along like brothers and we loved to speak our Spanish language. I worked as a Corrections Consultant in different prisons from San Jose , Calif. to the NYC/NYS/Federal prisons from the 1980s until 1998. Today is the 1st time checking out Negra on KZbin. It's quite obvious that she is good to go. My heart goes out to female inmates all over. Good luck, Negra. BTW there are plenty of Negras right here in the Bronx. They are all usually great salsa music dancers.

States sent juveniles to prisons where men were killers doing life and these kids HAD to adapt to the prison mentality to survive. When times up they toss them now as grown men to the streets. Many of them never had a driver license, had a job, went to high school prom, and so much more.
