This movie was what convinced me that the game I had been working on for a year was worth something, even though my parents and friends didn't think so. Finishing the game was a lonely and traumatic experience but seven years later it has paid for my house and car, given me lasting income, and led directly to meeting all of my best friends and even my wife. Parents and old life be damned. To all the other indie devs out there: if it feels real, it's because it is! You can do it.

Can we appreciate how well made this trailer is. How the music resonates while introducing the three characters, and then starts raising as they talk about their passions and weaknesses, pauses when they struggle to an obstacle, and finally volume goes to the roof the moment they give all they got to finish their games at release day. As an spectator it feels like climbing a mountain (maybe a methaphore of them achieving their dreams, sort of like the classic hero journey). It's very moving. It's been 9 years and I keep returning to this video, and it still keep giving me the chills. Great movie. Highly recommended.

There have been nights where I was like what we see in this trailer: hunched over at my desk, with my head in my hands after seeing some bug I have no clue about how to fix, tired, wondering if MMU will ever be completed. And I was "only working on a Megaman fan-game". Not even making money off of it. It takes so long that, even if you are doing what you love, because you are so emotionally invested in it, there are times you just wish it'd be all over so you can tell people that you accomplished something. So I totally understand the feeling they're talking about.

It's too bad that the world of indie production isn't nearly as exciting as indie development. Having to deal with the life-or-death legal battles, fending off corporate competitors that want to crush you under their marketing boot, and the occasional individual crisis when a team member's parent suddenly passes away are just not as interesting as the individuals' stories.

Absolutely. You know, I always look at this trailer with fondness for some reason. It reminds me of the good old-days of immature naivety when I believed that life isn't too complicated despite the fact that movie literally tried to convey the opposite message. I also truly believed that I would never let the challenges and setbacks affect me much as they did most of the devs depicted in the film and that success was inevitably waiting for me around the corner. Little did I want to admit at the time is that I'm no different at all than any of them when it comes to the emotional processing capabilities. I know it's stupid, but in some way I wish I could go back in time.

The games itself, people, old stuff llke youtube or newgrounds, basically 2010 internet in major, the places and landscapes, cities, the clothing, furniture, the music, all of this things is what makes stuff like this so nostalgic. ***** That is the best way to go. The game industry is a horrendous, soul-crushing machine. Get a traditional software dev gig as your day job (they are 100x more stable than any game industry job) and work on your own games on the side, the way you see fit without anyone telling you how they should be or having to worry whether they make money or not.
@timcrouch241510 жыл бұрын
***** I'm not sure how old you are. If I was younger, and had it all to do over again, I likely would have done it in my early 20's. Before you have a spouse and want to start a family, it could be a ton of fun, and it would kick-start your game dev knowledge and skill since you would be doing it 40 - 60 hours a week. A lot of successful indie devs started in the AAA industry and left it to go indie. But where I am now, potentially looking for a new job every 18 months (or less in the case of studio closures, which are a constant fact of life) just isn't in the cards. If you are a younger person considering where you want to go in software development and you love game development, I would keep your education and portfolio filled with traditional software development but don't completely shut out putting in a few years in the game industry. Just be prepared for the day you may wake up and not want to be part of the industry anymore. I know this may sound kind of 180 from what I said before, but I was more speaking from where I am right now, well into my 30's. I do sometimes regret getting into professional software development kind of late, and squandering my low-responsibility years working in telecom lol. Best of luck to you in your endeavors!
