I played through Alisa on steam, back when it launched and there were zero issues using a controller without a user made profile. I wonder if it's got something to do with you playing on a steam deck or some new update.

Alisa is by far one of the most captivating games I’ve ever seen in a long while. I adore the very specific and obscure wax 90s horror game look and I’m extremely happy this developer took that art direction, as not only does it look beautiful, but incredibly eerie and creepy in a way that pretty much all modern horror games lack. Signalis is cool but there’s something special about Alisa, it’s such a shame that there’s so many issues dragging it down, and I hope and pray that he can fix most of the issues or even consider hiring a few people to help tweak them, as I want to play it asap but and turned off by the issues. Regardless it’s one of the most captivating videogames I’ve ever seen.

What drag Alisa down was most definitely the shop system. Weapons should have been acquired by story progression. Would have been an easy recommend if it wasn't so tedious to replay.

Tbh, Alisa is MUCH better than Nerrel made it out to be. The game Indeed has some problems, but as long as you use modern controls (I truly believe tank controls make Alisa worse), get used to the jank that fixed camera pretty much demands and use some strategy to deal with enemies instead of always running from them, you're gonna love it, specially because it's goes somewhat beyond the classics.

Really fun, I ended up playing it twice in a row because the gameplay is so well done, and also knowing ahead of time what's going to happen makes item usage more interesting, especially on the hardest difficulty. For instance, I also thought the same as Nerrel about the flares, until the second playthrough I realize they give you plenty as long as you use them on high traffic rooms or on tougher enemies with some for regular enemies (I also think certain ones never revive). I also thought that 6 inventory slots was too little but felt that 7 would have been perfect. So, I think the "revised" setting would work best (I played before the update came out, so I haven't tested it) because it makes the light not take up space which was the worst part for me. I think 8 would be too generous, except for the final boss, since on hard difficulty you legitimately don't have enough space for all the weapons and ammo you "need" (I mean, it is possible I think, but just much slower). I actually have very little experience with classic RE style games (I cannot do tank controls no matter how hard I try) and I managed to survive my first playthrough of the game without dying, which is tied to an achievement funnily enough, but I got that achievement on the hard difficulty which I think is much more fun in some ways but likely was only as easy as it was because I knew what was coming.

Happy to see Signalis here. It's such a gem of a game. At launch I didn't have the same problems with the inventory as most. The camera and flashlight taking up a slot was my only problem, but the six slots created a lot of tension and interesting choices for me. What do I pick up now, ammo or health? Do I bring extra ammo to load into my gun after clearing a room? Which bodies do I burn to make the back track easier? All the core systems where really vibing together for me. That being said I love the new update. Revised is my goto, and I'm excited to give extended a shot in the future.

Yeah, I really felt that 7 slots would be the perfect amount but having 6 and then the flashlight not counting is the perfect middle ground! It's a shame about Alisa since I think that game is great but I understand the issues. I had similar problems where it wasn't registering the controller I plugged in, it was fixed later and it controlled great afterward but I forgot how I got it to that point. I got used to aiming partway through the experience but I died many times before I did so. I found out that using the sword is key to getting through the game as it can be used to stunlock a large number of enemies as well as run circles around some of the bigger ones, but again this did require some testing and dying. On the off chance you see this, did you spend any money on the modifications in your playthrough?

I think you summed it up perfectly, in that these games being developed by one guy or a very small group is IMPRESSIVE. It's incredible to see how so much effort and heart went into making most of these titles. They all look SO cool and enticing, but seem to lack some sort of polish which I think could be fixed by playtesting - something probably easily acquirable, but not with enough breadth to fully work out the kinks. These are the kind of games that make me think of what might come next out of these devs, and to see if they learn some things from these titles. It's artwork in the making. I was sad to see the Alisa review but not particularly surprised. I followed the game through its development and the developer had a strong vision for better or worse. The controls especially were a point of contention. "Auto aim" eventually got added but it has so many concessions (only aims at an enemy's last position, vertical aiming is still manual) that it is borderline useless for most of the fast moving or crawling enemies in the game. It's a huge shame because the game is absolutely packed with wonderfully unique enemies and locations, and a wealth of fun unlockables that make it a blast to replay. If you can move past the issues mentioned in the review it's one of the best indie survival horror titles out there. For anyone interested in playing still, there are a couple of ways of negating a lot of the issues: 1) Use modern controls. The sudden and unexpected camera changes will confuse movement, but enemies are vastly more manageable this way. Attacks can be avoided much more easily and aiming is less cumbersome. I love tank controls but Alisa was designed poorly for them. 2) Use the sword. Nerrel thought it slow and useless but in this case he probably hampered himself. Attacks have a wide angle of effect so your aim doesnt have to be precise like with guns, and it can stunlock most enemies for a few seconds. You can kill almost anything by slashing a couple times, circling the enemy, slashing again, rinse and repeat. Not to mention it saves ammo and you can block with it. Honestly it's absolutely vital for levelling the playing field with those bastard crawling enemies.

He's a very smart and perceptive guy with perhaps the keenest attention to detail ive ever seen. But i haved noticed his grips about difficulty in reviews can sometimes at least partially be just kind of skill issue lol. we cant all be perfect though and he usually does a good job of explaining why he wasnt having fun
@funnylebowski2 Жыл бұрын
@@shanegale6143 Yes! I play an awful lot of survival horror games, so mechanics that may seem more obvious to me might not be for someone less familiar with the genre's tropes. Although in this instance I *personally* see Nerrel skipping over the sword less of a skill issue and more of a failure of game design. For instance, you have to buy the sword. It's immediately available but with how few cogs you get at the start of the game, doubled with the fact they're also used for saving, it's a huge investment that many players probably skip. Due to this there are no segments "tutorialising" its mechanics. Couple this with the fact that both the enemies and the guns you kill them with are generally much faster, it's easy to jump to the conclusion that the sword maybe isn't useful. Hell it even takes up one of your two vital weapon slots. It's not insane to think "I want to take a small gun for the grunts and a big gun for the difficult enemies"
@allanzzthanatoszz6 ай бұрын

I found the 6 item limit in Signalis interesting if a slightly awkward on the first playthrough but workable, and actually very fun on repeat play throughs. You end up having to duck and weave past enemies a lot more, giving a nice risk & reward to them that they otherwise don't really have when you're just killing/rekilling them. The combat's alright but the movement feels better to me. Also, you can see how minimally you can equip yourself and how many puzzle items you can get in one go around before returning to the safe rooms. (You don't actually need the flashlight that often.) It lends itself to (semi-)speedrunning well after you've gone through it once. It's like a classic RE or Silent Hill game like that. It's nice that people now have the option to change it, and the flashlight not taking up a slot makes sense, but I did come to find most complaints about the inventory system a bit overblown.

When you mentioned the anime-type cut scenes in Signalis, I was reminded of what you said in your Collection of Mana video: About how it's always as if devs are sneaking in anime characters for no reason. I've seen so many smaller games with either cool ideas or interesting settings, only for those cool/unique aspects to to be muddied by the inclusion of cutesy, quirky anime style characters which stick out from an otherwise cohesive style.

they are anime people throughout the game though. even the low poly models are anime as fuck. it doesn't come outta nowhere

Evil Tonight looks pretty cool, but the best top-down RE clone I've found yet was Heaven's Dust 2. The first one is pretty cool, but the sequel improved every aspect and genuinely feels like something Capcom might have made as a RE series for DS, absolute top quality and blew my mind that an indie game nailed it so well.

A shame that you bounced off Alisa. I don't want to backseat or anything since I think most of your complaints were valid, but I do think that you underrated the sword. Its block parries almost every melee attack in the game, leaving you unhurt and able to counter with a swing of your own. It was such a powerful option that I almost never had it unequipped.

EXCUSE ME, THE SWORD HAS A BLOCK???????????????? I recently played the game and dropped it 2/3rds into it due to having the exact same issues described in this video (even tho I actually used the sword quite a lot) and utterly hated my time with it. But this knowledge is a game changer What the FUCK. WHY DOES THE GAME NOT TELL YOU THIS, HOW DO I USE THE BLOCK

I played it earlier this year, but Endoparasitic was a very cool survival horror game where you play as a dude with one arm and he has to drag his sorry ass everywhere shooting monsters and fighting back a parasitic infection. It’s played entirely with the mouse and it has a tactical feel to it. You have to manually reload each bullet in your guns, the game doesn’t pause when you’re in your inventory, and you have to remember to treat your infection every so often. The story wasn’t bad, the voice acting was surprisingly good, and it took me about 5 hours to beat.

aww mann I played Signalis before the inventory update. That patch would have been VERY welcome when I played it the first time. I really enjoyed the game outside of that one aspect
@harryvass9018 Жыл бұрын
You made a huge mistake not using the sword in Alisa It's the best weapon on the whole game. if you know what you are doing you can stun lock almost every enemy and kill them without using a single bullet. I killed basically every single enemy in the game cause it was easy. only times I used my guns was when there's more than two enemies in the room or it's a boss. But I was stocked on money ammo and health. compared to Signalis it's a walk in the park. and one of my favourite horror games in recent memory.

So if I lean on melee the game is good? That's how I play sh anyway
@FinalFrantasy Жыл бұрын
I legit think the game is good any way you play it, check other reviews as this one is very much an outlier. Something about his setup was giving him crazy control issues :o But also yes the melee weapons are great!@@jaykelley103

So weird, I didnt have any of your issue with ALISA, I had issues when connecting my Xbox Series X controller the first time but nothing really after that. About signalis, do I remember the game 100% wrong? I think yes you can burn multiple bodies when they are on top of eachother and killed enemies did not always rise after I killed them, I could like go past an enemy 20 times and they never got back up. Guess there some randomisation going on.
@anima94 Жыл бұрын
Same for Alisa, the controller thing was weird but once it was fixed it was smooth sailing. Would you recommend Signalis? I only played within the refund window and didnt like it at all (especially compared to Alisa)
@CaptainPerfect Жыл бұрын
Yes I do recommed Signalis, its a great treat for people who like survival horror and silent specifically but if it did not grab you in the start no need to force yourself. The game doesnt really change too much the farther you go but the world, story and music is phenomenal in my opinion.@@anima94

I saw my comment on the steam forum! Really love song of horror and i feel like you may have approached it with the wrong mindset. You shouldn’t get frustrated by character death, it may feel cheap but you have 3 other characters and people dying actually changes the plot and the cutscenes you get, making your story unique. It may be odd design in this day and age, but you really miss out on a lot by caving to frustration and playing on easy, you can’t even experience the mechanic of the deceased characters helping you and giving you items, or getting different playable characters in chapter 4/5. Stay on normal/hard and see how your unique story will unfold!

@Edo_Luna_4 ай бұрын
@dalgusmaximus4557 Uhum. If you think a bit, you can build simple strategies for a lot of enemies and kill them with the saber without wasting ammo.

I stopped playing Signalis and considered downloading a mod that would give me up to 12 inventory slots since I was so frustrated with all the constant backtracking to item boxes. Then the devs released a patch to fix this problem. And just like Daddy Nerrel, I wanna give them a hug as well. More horror game reviews, pls Nerrel.

You whippersnappers! I beat Signalis on release with the six slots and LIKED it! (buuuuuut you're probably right that the update would have meant a lot less tedious backtracking, haha. That's cool for the devs to do!)
@DarkZide8 Жыл бұрын
Signalis was great before the patch too - I don't agree with the inventory needing to be fixed. That's actually my favorite part of the game - that it was so tight with inventory that going back and forth between the store rooms mattered and you had to plan more, executed perfectly with enemies that resurrect. With that said - if it makes more people enjoy the masterpiece that is Signalis - then I don't mind. The old style is still there. Signalis needs both more praise and more fans in general, it's probably the best game to replace both Resident Evil and Silent Hill atm.
