GOD’S COUNTRY
Sandra (Thandiwe Newton) is very tired. It’s been years of trying (and failing) to please her recently deceased mother, while also navigating the challenging politics and power dynamics at the college where she teaches. And then there is the racism, sexism, and toxic masculinity she encounters wherever she goes. But it’s a confrontation with two hunters trespassing on her property that ultimately tests Sandra’s self-restraint, pushing her grief and mounting anger to their limits. God’s Country examines one woman’s grieving process and determination to be taken seriously amid her refusal to surrender to the confines of society.

@@shaha9 I thought it was good. I'm not sure if it will have a huge audience for the movie - IFC Films bought it and it's coming out later this year.

Tandee was incredible in this movie. She had me soooooooo intensity twitching in my seat. Omg. So so so vulnerable and deep. The shots, the photograph, the dialogue...

I just saw the film and it is phenomenal. Even though this film is set in America the themes are global and she embodies Sandra perfectly. I believed she was a Black American woman in this situation. I felt so connected to this character in so many ways. Well done!

Welp, the good news is that this interview is being seen far & wide. But the bad news is that Thandiwe has antagonized African American women specifically and our global diaspora of dark skinned continental African women in general. We ain't watching this movie. She literally paints herself as the victim of discrimination by African American women all while she benefits from the privilege white supremacy affords her in the roles she gets because of her skin color and the enchantment hollywood has with Europeans. They're anglophiles and colorists. Also--- Thandiwe hasn't learned to stop cutting people off when they're talking.

We saw a Sundance screening of this and yikes!!! It's pretty bad. First of all Thandiwe Newton's British accent slips through for nearly the entire run time of the movie. She's just not as skilled as other actresses. Also, the theme is simply a common overused retread of countless previous films. It's like a bad ripoff of 'Straw Dogs'. However most notably, it was boring. I must have looked at my watch no less than five times. Thankfully we're looking forward to seeing 'Alice' on Tuesday and 'Honk for Jesus. Save Your Soul' on Friday.

I love her acknowledgment of her placement in African American culture. Honestly. Glad to hear someone from the uk actually referrers to themselves as "black". The self reflection is there. I understand the congative distance the African Americans have with her and respect that. I don't think the black expression & experience is ready for the international platform. It has no choice now. I love it

This comment SCREAMS I’ve never experienced or lived amongst black communities outside of my own… this is false. This is 2022, black culture outside of America is greater than its ever been and has been for a while, probably as early as 2014 and beginning inceptions of BLM. Also Thandiwe is a British woman, british people to recognize biracial people as biracial both legally and socially, we don’t call them black, why don’t you guys get that that practice is particular to America because of chattel slavery!

The character is originally a white old man and now somehow Thandie is not black enough for the role? What is this world?

@@DoubleO88 she’s biracial. Black signifies two black parents.

Thandiwe Newton is not even Black and it's insulting that she was even cast in this role. Jennifer Lawrence would be more credible as an African American woman than she is.

Hate to say it but this was awful. It's honestly like a Lifetime movie of the week.
