read about the devs intention and i think of that ending not as a dark one, but as an empowered one. also i feel that as we got rid of the pointless artifact we stop hearing the devil and we also see ourselves as human (the reflection is our own). so we can finally find our own path in the world and stop beeing scred into submission (not to our fathers pov nor the strict catholic view). That is a really beautiful thing to me ^^

You are absolutely correct in your understanding of the plot. I watched an interview with the creator of the game, he said that as a child he was very religious and regularly attended church. The podcast asked him what do you think now? He said he was a militant atheist. The message of the story is quite straightforward, the voice in the head is rational thinking.

The devil inside her was saying 'I will only dissapear when you wouldn't care about me' and he would stay as long as she wants him gone. So when she opened the box and saw nothing there, her faith faded and she stopped caring about the devil, therefore she stopped seeing her self as the devil. Very clever way of putting things and a way to almost show 'insanity' in some game scenes /or things that cease to make sense.

At first, she fears them, then finds them a challenge but accepts them, to then fully embrace them and viewing herself as the devil as a result. I think the point with Ilya is that he wanted to die, actually. That the very things he believe in most also has him on a death march he refused to let go of. I think that's why the scar on his arm is so recent in appearance. It's warmer/pinker in color than the rest of his body, even though he's dying of sepsis. That's the hint of it's recency. Ilya also is implied to not be in a great place mentally. I'm not sure what happened with his arm right now, or the shot, but I'm certain he wasn't in a good place mentally. And that's before how sepsis can cause not so great mental health affects like delusions.
@COYOTE7435 ай бұрын
I have a wild theory that Ilya isn't actually real (or he died at some point), that's why there's smoke coming out of his wound. He's basically a personification of the last remnant of Indika's faith, he tried very hard to bring her back to God but ultimately failed, because she was so stubborn. This theory kinda fell when the father called guards on him, however the game is too cryptic so maybe there's an explanation to my theory being correct. This is what I love about games/movies like this, it keeps you guessing and theorizing and never give you a clear answer.
@intenebrisveritas5 ай бұрын
@@COYOTE743 I'm glad you said this cause, at one point, I had the same theory myself!! Like, with how sepsis travels through the body and how rotted his arm was, I was convinced he purposely looks like a corpse/undead because he isn't real. I assumed the real Ilya died after getting shot very early on unless he got extremely lucky and the shot hit an already necrotic part of his body. Only thing is that, with the amount of weird things that happened later, I figured it couldn't be possible he's dead/unreal unless there's a rational explanation for a LOT of things Indika couldn't have done on her own. I'm honestly hoping somebody who knows about Catholicism does a deep dive into the game one day. There's so many Catholic references that went entirely above my head and I think that'll offer some clarity!
@COYOTE7435 ай бұрын
@intenebrisveritas true, a lot of puzzles wouldn't make much sense if it was only Indika the whole time, but it's hard to look at things with logic when a puzzle had you go through massive fish and another that had you pick up entire buildings. Regardless, this is definitely one of the those games I'd watch hours of youtube essays about and never get bored.

I think it was actually a happy ending the voice representing her fear and doubt and guilt all at the hands of religion but once she overcomes that trauma and takes her destiny into her own hands he's gone she's free it wasn't a devil it was just her own true nature trying to breakthrough now she's free to be whatever she wants to be no longer constantly fighting her nature constantly tolerating the horrific abuse constantly apologizing and groveling the louder she registered her true nature assuming it to be something evil the louder that nature became now this represents self acceptance the good the bad the warm the cold it all just is and the moral judgments we place on it are nothing more than human ideas

Okay, I didn’t expect to enjoy this one. Usually with skepticism heavy stories, there’s always something at the end, like in Life of Pi or Pan’s Labyrinth, that attempts to preserve the faithful’s perspective over the skeptical one despite everything. But after that ending, I think I like this game. It’s just such a beautiful tragedy. In fact, Indika’s character arc reminds me of what was said of the philosopher Henry Sidgwick: something to the effect of, he was a religious man who tried to prove God and souls exist but accidentally proved atheism, which he regretted to his grave. I will say, however, while it’s convenient for the story that she didn’t, I’m surprised Indika didn’t receive some theological and theodicy training as a nun, since churches usually prepare those in their ranks with all sorts of rationalizations and apologetics for philosophical and scientific challenges against their faith, such as many that are presented here. The main one being the paradox of free-will and the use of the Open Question Argument to prove moral nihilism.

Even as someone who is religious and doesnt necessarilly agree with some of the opinions of the game i can still appreciate this game a lot. I grew up going to catholic school and around many very religious catholic family members. My experiences were not always the best as i grew up with a single mom. I was religious for part of my childhood but my mom chose the school due to the actual education being better than the public schools in my area (which im very thankful for) not for the religious aspect. But there was so much judgement towards me and my mom due to her not being married. I was outcasted to a certain degree and made to feel like i was less than because of the circumstances of how i was born. Other family members were judgemental and harsh as well. This really pushed me away from my faith as a preteen and teenager and created a lot of anger, sadness, confusion, and trauma in me. I felt rejected by God and the community. I think that the feelings Indika goes through in the game can be really relatable to a lot of people who grew up in the church especially more traditional churches. You can end up questioning your faith a lot due to the actions of others. I think its a conversation that should be had more often. While my current life/ending to that issue is very different from Indikas i also have empathy for peoole who do completely lose their faith after being put in a position of questioning it like she does. It took me quite a few years to find God again after i felt abandoned and lost my faith. I think everyone has their own path and thats the beauty and pain of free will. We struggle, we question things, we have the choice to really get to know God or decide that we arent interested. While i am sad for those who feel that God isnt "for them" or that God doesnt love them because God loves everyone and the ending to me makes my heart hurt i am also a strong believer in our free will and if someone believes they are happier not knowing God then i respect their choice. Overall very uncommon and interesting storyline choice for a game and i think religious or not most people could probably enjoy this game to a degree and relate to it in some way. Even people who have never been religious. Most people know what it feels like to question your own beliefs and feel rejected and lost. Its a part of life for us all.

I love long form as long as there are chapters I feel like part of the point is not empathizing with Indika. She let a boy rob her dad and didn’t recognize him resulting in his death. I think her “punishment” is mostly due to her own values being broken at 15. That’s why it was her “choice” to go to the convent. I do feel bad but I think we’re not supposed to. She’s not innocent but she shouldn’t be crucified

I love the concept of her losing her faith by end, but I was really hoping for explanations for all of the odd things, specifically the pixel art and point system. It was something always in your face, but it wasn't given any context so I am not sure where the devs were going with that.

I think the UI style was to put the player in the head space of the Devil, that Indika is nothing more than a game to play, to the point where even her most impactful memories are nothing more than a game to beat. This wouldn't have been so clear if they didn't do such a good job showing her thoughts and feeling throughout the game, also putting you in Indika's perspective. It was to put the player in two perspectives simultaneously. I think the point system was to represent the pointlessness of doing good works or "play the game" in order to get into heaven. That doing good or holy deeds should be something you genuinely want to do instead of for a goal.
