In this edition of Tarikh, Nikhil talks about Dhirendra Brahmachari (1924-1994) who was an Indian yoga guru and spiritual leader. He gained prominence as the yoga instructor of the late Indian Prime Minister, Indira Gandhi. Brahmachari was born in Bihar, India, and studied yoga and Ayurveda from a young age. He established the Yoga Research Institute in New Delhi, where he taught and promoted yoga as a means of achieving physical and mental well-being.
Brahmachari's association with Indira Gandhi began in the late 1950s when she sought his guidance for her health issues. Impressed by his teachings, she became his student and continued to learn from him throughout her life. Brahmachari's influence on Gandhi was significant, and he was often referred to as ‘Rasputin of India’. Dhirendra Brahmachari passed away in 1994.
