The difference between Individualism and Collectivism.

In conclusion, both individualism and collectivism have their advantages and drawbacks, and the ideal balance between the two dimensions can vary depending on cultural, societal, and individual preferences. It's also worth noting that many societies exhibit a mix of both dimensions, and cultural norms can change over time. Understanding these dimensions can help individuals and societies navigate the complex interplay between personal freedom and communal well-being.

The mid thing is Tribalism and it's the worst of all. You are neglected either individual freedom nor help from others. It is mafia's thing. Tribalism has ripped Italy apart and wiped out italians.

I can tell you right now that a collectivist mindset in a household accelerates wealth. When a family deals in bulk, living under a household, money can be saved through cost reduction in rent, food, child care, and material needs.
@interculturalenglish97943 жыл бұрын
I agree completely. However, in countries who employ collectivism politically as an ideology, the family comes second, and is subordinate to the state. In religious and political cults there is no room for the family.
@zlayer31702 жыл бұрын
Collectivism doesn’t refer to life in small groups, like families or small businesses, collectivism is when you are subject to a very large group, like a government who has no concern for individual liberty and would sacrifice you without a second thought. Your family and your close friends, neighbors are not a parameter to determine within collectivism or individualism, in a particular group.

There are no individualistic countries. The u.s is a mixed economy, not a free market economy making the u.s a socialist/fascist country. This means that there are some freedoms exercised by the individual but the collective is more important. The u.s is a collective society with some freedoms...
@interculturalenglish97944 жыл бұрын
I can't disagree with anything you said. But, we can also take some other factors into account to get a broader understanding. In Western cultures, the premise that all individuals are sovereign and equal, originally came from Christianity and is still enshrined in the law systems today. In theory, the U.S. is a society of responsible individuals who choose to work together through democracy, but ultimately answer to their god. However, in practice, it appears that many people would prefer to trade in their responsibilities and freedoms for more protection and direction from the state. In my opinion this is a political struggle and will result in either a more collective dictatorial style of government, or the break up of the country itself.

As a collectivist you may have no idea what i being talked about by denigrating individualists as selfish and believe only in the ME. It is having the right to be informed when a loved one has been killed on a Malaysian Airliner. Even though it may embarrass the government or airline company. As a collectivist you have no right for your gov't to inform you that the pilot may have been trying to negotiate with the gov't for the release of a prisoner. Your loved one is dead and there is no consequence or responsibility to the group.

both individualism and collectivism has it's own advantages and flaws but, individualism sees every person equally and evaluate them rationally, but in collectivism more important members gets the higher priority and righ to take decisions. goverment decides for us, so, democratic country should have individualism culture rather than collectivism, I can see your point there.

@@UN1VERS3S I agree with your statement, but I do think that many cultures tend towards one or the other. I actually live in an Asian country which, on the whole, displays more of a collective approach to life, but also has some strong individualistic elements to it. I appreciate that collective cultures in other parts of the world could well look quite different to what I experience here. I'd be happy to learn your thoughts on collectivism.

I'm not making any judgements, but it appears to me that this pandemic is being used as a method to achieve more collectivization. The response in Sweden and in some U.S. states seems to have been an individualistic one, and they aren't doing significantly worse than other places. However, I think it's too soon to know either way for sure.

Both kinds of cultures have their advantages and disadvantages. If you value independence and privacy then Individualistic is better for you. If you value comradeship and prefer a 'safety in numbers' approach to life then you will be more comfortable in a Collective culture.

Cast in terms of responsibility, individualism seems to be superior! But is this dimension reducable really to the matter of responsibility?
@DanNorton14 жыл бұрын
@@interculturalenglish9794 I think an individualistic culture is always best for everyone. "If you value...." That's already taking an individualist perspective. The collectivist perspective holds that it doesn't matter what you value. Your individual values are sacrificed to the group. So it's a contradiction to say that a collectivist culture is best for me individually. The culture best for me individually is the one that values me as an individual, i.e., an individualist culture. courses.aynrand.org/lexicon/individualism/ courses.aynrand.org/lexicon/collectivism/

@@jinamatcharia8027 Are you asking whether there are considerations other than responsibility that are relevant to deciding whether individualism or collectivism is superior?
@jinamatcharia80274 жыл бұрын
@@DanNorton1 I was trying to say that you can't reduce the whole individualism-collectivism dimension to the responsibility issue. And if you say on one side you have responsible people and on the other irresponsible people, this is doomed to announce one side as good and/or better and the other as bad and/or worse. The main statement (that it all boils down to responsibility) oversimplifies the dimension so much that it distorts it
@Psalm118.262 жыл бұрын
In a nutshell, "Win Win" vs "I Win." United we stand divided we fall. Individualism is a "me" society that focuses on "me, myself and I," "what's in it for me?" and "give me my entitlement!" Collectivism is a "we" society that garners unity, harmony and working together as a whole for the benefit and wellbeing of everyone.

I'm not unsympathetic to this view, however, there are also downsides to collectivism. In collectivist cultures it is very difficult to disagree with the prevailing orthodoxly of the group - which stifles innovation and spontaneity. I've personally witnessed meetings where everybody agrees with a bad idea just because they are scared of standing out from the group. In authoritarian societies where nepotism is prevalent, collectivism can evolve into something that resembles mass slavery. I think one of the great achievements of English speaking cultures is the protection of an individual's rights in the law. The freedom to express yourself is balanced by the expectation that you are responsible for your own actions. Ultimately, I think, as in most situations, societies should avoid the excesses and extremes on either side.

How is europe individual? Dont they have lots of social welfare programs? What exactly is the line between the two concepts since within the same country there are laws that lean more to the collectivist side while other lean more to the individualist one? How do you dictate if a country is individualistic or collectivist?
@meneither38343 жыл бұрын
The idea behind social welfare programs is to allow people to reach their full potential without being shackled by bad luck or bad living conditions. In that sense. It can pass as an individualistic measure. All of that said. You should remember that Europe is still a capitalist society with it's economy based around free markets and free trade. Welfare programs don't change that fact. And companies aren't all that restrained or taxed. Individualism &collectivism also exist in daily interactions, they are about more than policies and in that sense, although Europe is more collectivist than America (with variation between countries) it is still very individualistic relative to the world.
@d4nkx5493 жыл бұрын
Pure individualism would be anarchy while pure collectivism would be communism. Most societies are a mix of both. Some are more individualist while others are more collectivist.
