🇮🇩 INDONESIA For Christmas!! Wishing YOU a Peaceful (and Delicious) 2024 from Berastagi, Sumatra

Merry Christmas everyone, welcome to Sumatra, Indonesia!! Absolutely incredible to be here, and wow are we happy to finally visit (after I have been living in South East Asia for almost 15 years!)
I will share more details about this amazing place, but as it is my FIRST time here, therefore maybe my first time to greet you, I want to be clear about the true meaning of Christmas - the "tidings of great joy" - as this video is going live on Christmas day.
HAVE YOU EVER HEARD that "we are loved," or that "God loves you?" Well, its true! Each and every one of us is loved by God, loved SO much. God loves us so very much that (in our human timeline) about two thousand years ago he sent his only son Jesus into the world to be the light of the world, to die for us, that we might be free. FREE to live in peace with one another, with a guarantee of hope in a future not leading to death but a bright future of Life. I am proud to visit this new country today (as I do all the new places I visit!) as a representative of that love, and of the hope that I have in Him.
Thank you for joining us for this meal together, it IS a happy occasion for sure!, but I also hope that you know that PEOPLE are the most important thing on earth. I believe that the way that God asks us to "Love one another, just as we love ourselves" is not just something to say, but actually something to strive for, something to live for!, and I believe that with encouragement, forgiveness, kindness, and hope (all different aspects and actions that will happen when we put LOVE first) we can enjoy small glimpses of heaven right here on Earth.

Rene! Wow man. Thats a great question. Ok, and deserving of an honest answer for sure :).

Many curries are made up of a basically similar mix of ingredients (here, and of course from India to Thailand to Pakistan to Malaysia...). So, to a new-comer, yes there would be some aspect simply of "CURRY" that would be similar (I think "same same" would show that the person is just not interested, not actually trying..., but yes, they would be similar). The style of cooking a curry could be soupy, or dry, or including stewed/boiled ingredients, or grilled/dried, and then finally preserved/pickled. So right there, I guess there are 3 general types of "curry" that would be quite different, and then if you switch the meat/veg that features in the curry, you could easily have 10 different textures going on (which definitely influences the dish), and therefore 3 x 10 = 30 quite easily different curries. BUT. I would say thats just a simple approach. After living here in SE Asia for years, AND being extremely into the food and exploring all the options I can find, I would say that there is a VERY large and very noticeable difference between the climates, cultures, styles, between the inclusion of chili (different countries rely more heavily on delicate spices, some just go like half of the curry paste is chili peppers), the raw ingredients, between the amount of spices used to begin with, and maybe even the carbohydrate that accomodates them? (Indian/Pakistani using bread, Thai/Malay/Indo using different types of rice, it has some influence on the overall taste and feel for sure!) I would say in the end, YES, I can confidently say that there are hundreds (if not even a thousand!) different types of curry that could each have their own reason why this or that curry deserves to have its own name (and its own distinguishable flavor, if possibly the look of which is not sooo different maybe than another curry from a similar place/culture/climate).

In case you visit Bandung or West Java, these are my recommended Sundanese foods that you should try: Kupat Tahu (Singaparna), Nasi Liwet/Nasi Timbel, Sate Maranggi (satay with coriander), Karedok/Lotek (salad), and Batagor (fried dumpling).
