Nobel Laureate Bishop Belo met President Habibie of Jakarta for the first time on Wednesday.
The meeting covered many aspects of life in East Timor including human rights issues and the possible withdrawal of some Indonesian troops from the province.
But the talks did not, however, cover the status of East Timor.
East Timor is Indonesia's 27th province.
Bishop Belo, East Timor's most famous son and Nobel Laureate, met with the new Indonesian President on Wednesday at the Presidential Palace in Jakarta.
The talks, which lasted for one hour and a half, touched on many subjects - including human rights issues, the release of political prisoners and the possible reduction of troops in the province.
But they did not directly address the status of East Timor.
After the talks Bishop Belo made it clear that he was impressed with the new President and said that he believed real progress could be achieved for the people of East Timor.
