Indonesian eco-warrior Sadiman has turned barren and arid hills green through his 24-year personal reforestation project. Once called “crazy” by fellow villagers, the 69-year-old has planted at least 11,000 banyan and ficus trees across 250 hectares (617 acres), in the town of Wonogiri in Indonesia’s Central Java province. As a result of his efforts, new water resources have become available in the drought-prone mountainous region.

I see that they have the same superstitions that we have towards banyan trees in the Philippines, where bad spirits make banyan trees their home, that's why if it's already big we leave them alone but certainly not plant them. It's not a toxic reason because the cause isn't hatred, it's superstition. If you live in a society with superstitions, you will understand.

It had smt to do with the tree Beringin is sacred according to the Javanese culture, it was always told to not be planted without important intentions. But tbh he was doing the right thing, he’s saving the mountain and the helping the environment.

@@darrenshan296 in indonesia it’s different. If you go to the Jogjakarta’s palace (Keraton), there are two beringin in front of it. Since Beringin has it’s own meaning they think he is insane for planting a sacred tree. There are many Believes about trees and tbh mostly it’s abt bad luck. All i want to say is that he’s not insane, but according to those who believe that the Beringin is sacred and have ancestors soul lurking into it, thinks that he’s insane. Cultural context to why he is called a madman: He was planting banyan tree everywhere in the forest. A fully grown banyan tree is considered as sacred by several ethnicities in Indonesia and it is considered as the dwelling of forest spirits. The animist belief is still deeply rooted in rural Indonesia, and people of the village afraid that the banyan tree will grow to harbor bad forest spirits and disturb the livelihood of people in the village.
