The song Indonesia Raya was created by Wage Rudolf Supratman (born 1903) when Indonesia was still colonized by the Dutch. This song was introduced to the public at the Indonesian Youth Congress which also gave birth to the Youth Pledge (1928). In the course of time this song became increasingly popular and became an encouragement for the Indonesian people to demand independence, this made the colonial government prohibit the song from being sung and the songwriter became a fugitive from the government.After some time being chased by the police, WR Supratman was finally arrested and imprisoned. Shortly after his release from jail he became ill and died (1938). After Indonesia achieved independence, Indonesia Raya was made the national anthem and WR Supratman was declared a national hero.

The song was firstly played in 1928 during The Youth Pledge, 17 years before the proclamation of independence (1945). It was played by W.R. Soepratman, the composer of the song, by only using violin, then he made the lyrics. The first newspaper that spread the anthem original lyrics was Chinese-Dutch Indies Malay-spoken newspaper: Sin-Po.
