Indonesian officials warn of tsunami after volcano erupts

At least 11,000 people were forced to evacuate after a volcano erupted in Indonesia. The government is encouraging residents to leave with fears that part of the volcano could break off into the ocean and trigger a tsunami.

Remarkably, the eruption of Mt Tambora, in 1815, also in Indonesia, wasn’t mentioned. This was the largest volcano eruption in 1300 years and lowered the average temperature about 1 degree Celsius. This resulted in massive amounts of crop failure and food shortages in the northern hemisphere. Btw, it’s called The Year Without Summer, in 1816, and caused the most massive disruption of agriculture in North America.

A few people are mentioning Mount Tambora, however Mount Ruang erupted twice during the 1800s. The second eruption caused a tsunami which destroyed a large village on a nearby island. There were few survivors.

Yes all the ash, soot, CO2 from natural volcanic activity creates cool trends, some small and negligible (like this eruption, or like ones in Hawaii and Iceland, but are usually active) and some massive and serious (Like Vesuvius in Italy, Tambora in the same region as this volcano, or worse of all Yellowstone and those are dormant, all the magma inside is more solid) If any of the ladder examples blow again... human civilization is a gonna have VERY rough time following such an event.

Volcanoes have a minor and temporary effect on cooling the climate. Pinatubo in 1991 was the largest eruption in the last 100 hundred as a VEI 6 and yet it only cooled the climate 1F for a year. Global warming is accelerating too fast for current volcanic eruptions to make any significant difference. If a Tanbora like eruption occurred that would disrupt the climate for a couple years, but such eruptions are rare.

Under normal circumstances in the past that was true, but now with humans producing far more CO2 into the atmosphere than the atmosphere can absorb and process it is accumulating which is causing the climate to warm. It takes an especially large eruption that can cool the climate at all like Pinatubo in 1991. It injected 8--10 km³ of tephra into the atmosphere and 12 million tons of SO2!! When you make a conclusion based on an assumption you will almost always be wrong. Your assumption was that because of this eruption that "we" whoever that is will be supporting Indonesia. But this is a false assumption because this is not a catastrophe. A couple thousand people were relocated to a nearby island and there have been no casualties. After a time they will return to their island. And it's also not true that this "we" you refer to does not run around taking care of every other before fixing our own. Actually we can do both and do!! If "we" refers to the US the government can handle providing aid to many countries around the world. And often other countries in turn help out the US in natural disasters.

The breadth of the Indonesian archipelago is similar of the distance between London and Istanbul. The news has got to be more specific re location. Again, it's a huge country.
