Trust is such an underrated record. Really one of his best.

Not sure you're going to find a lot of records packing such an amazing 1-2 punch as "Watch Your Step" and "New Lace Sleeves". Interesting that he played them out of sequence here.

Elvis Costello is one of the greatest... at that time... and still unique today... He will always sound modern to me... And such a great band..

My 2 fav albums during this time: Trust & Darkness on the Edge of Town. Wore them out!!!! My first intro to EC was watching this phenomenal performance and interview with Snyder. Blown away by Watch Your Step- then and now!

In case you were wondering, Mr. Snyder: Yes, he was around 22 years later... and more. R.I.P., Tom.

I remember when he said that. I was wondering then where they would be... I loved Tom Snyder.🧡

As Tom Snyder acknowledges at the end, EC is a dream interviewee - articulate, funny, just enough edge, and none of your John Lydon scariness.

he's very honest with his response. says what he thinks, and doesn't like, as he said, "cheese".

love those old tom snyder long form interviews where you really get to hear the guest talk.

6:18 It's interesting that he picked dark sun glasses, looking a little like Ray Charles, for this song. Makes me wonder if he wrote it as a message to himself.

Thanks for posting this...I was a high school student when this aired and couldn't stay up to watch it (as the show, which was called "Tomorrow", aired after the Tonight Show with Johnny Carson.

Great performance of “Watch Your Step” - as in, performance, not some TV show lip sync lip service.

Can you imagine EC being on Larry King around this time (1980)? Larry asks: So Mr Elvis, where you watching detectives in London? Lol LOL, Tom just blows EC off when he tells him that his Dad discouraged him, he just keeps going, lol. I was really into the Trust album at that time, I played that sucker out, thanks for posting!

Great vid. Is it just me or did Elvis have a more working-class accent back then? Check 1:32 when he says "meself" for "myself". Thanks for posting.

"I will check with you in 22 years and see how it's going." How'd that work out for you, Tom? EC managed to hang around.

elvis had a very soft working - class educated accent ..in fact . its very interesting because its not pure scouse .he was born in london but raised in liverpool ..i think he spent more time then in london.im from liverpool and lived in crawley ( not far from london ) and i cant hear a real scouse or cockney accent except in certain words he uses .seems like a melange .think he reads a lot and has lost a lot of any thick accent he may have had..

I couldn't agree with you more Shraggy67. I remember watching his show with my parents. He always had the coolest guests! It's all bull shit knee jerk reactionary nonsense these days. Real journalism is slowly going extinct.

I don't think Snyder is the best musician interviewer, nor is Charlie Rose they don't have the background.
