Indren glacier on Monte Rosa continues to withdraw amid record temperatures on the Alps

Punta Indren's glacier on the Monte Rosa mountain range is continuing to withdraw. An ice layer growing thinner and thinner does not appear white anymore, but covered by a stretch of stone and gravel. With record temperatures across the Italian Alps and the zero degree isotherm at 5,300 meters (17,390 feet), streams melting water keep falling down through the rocks. Back in the early 90s this was a place for summer skiing. Now the landscape has changed so radically, it would be simply unthinkable.
