Great video. Thanks for posting. These designs are pretty objects. If anything this is a satire of industrial design. This kind of stuff was posted on Lemanoosh in 2014 so confused as to how this is a design trend in 2021. These design trends do help to communicate the function of the product, but is also is the opposite of good design. Style over function.
@somegraythings3 жыл бұрын
thanks for the perspective! I would disagree though. I would say it is using style to achieve function. Also, any trends you think are more 2021?
@magnusskold43143 жыл бұрын
@@somegraythings Ok so re-reading my comment I obviously came across far more salty and mean spirited than intended (sorry). That being said, I see where you are coming from but part of me feels like "style to achieve function" is the thinking that now that I have a hammer and everything else is a nail. The forms you created and colors you selected are all pleasing. Also, sustainability is KING! so that's great too. Where I am coming from is that the function should dictate the form, which dictates the style. The style of it is defined by the environment it is in. Maybe you already went through this thought process? I don't know. Maybe my question is: just because I can apply these design trends to an object does it mean I should? As for trends: Some of these trends are still current (although Pill shape is tired) but I see a more organic approach happening, patina textures, natural materials becoming more prevalent (spin-off sustainable) combined with some retro-90's-80's design elements. Not saying that's all my favorite things but I think that is what is going to happen LOL. Anywhoo, keep posting videos, somebody has to!
@somegraythings3 жыл бұрын
Cool! Thanks for the detailed response. I didn‘t see it as salty! But yes, it can quickly become style over function, which gets annoying real fast. Maybe i could make a video on process in the future, who knows. Still kind of figuring out what to focus on :D

Please explain to me in detail how do you use that thermometer, how do you read temp after measurement ? Is a goal of your design to make it harder to use your product ? Imagine your computer monitor balanced so the screen always points to the ceiling and when you want to look at it you need to hold it pointed to you with one hand and when you let go it goes back and points the screen up, that is what you designed or how do I see it, sorry.
@somegraythings3 жыл бұрын
I can see you are a man of detail! The idea was that it forces you to hold it further away from your face, hopefully lowering the risk of infection. If the screen was in the standard place, you would naturally bring the monitor closer to your face to read it. I filmed a whole section where I was explaining it, but I took it out due to time constraints. But I never tested it so maybe it wouldn't work, who knows!

Why would you put the display facing down in a thermometer, tho? You definitely need to see the screen as you point it to the target.
@somegraythings3 жыл бұрын
Yes, this would be the biggest criticism of thermometer. It was an attempt to encourage social distancing by making you hold the thermometer far away from your face to read it, but I never actually tested it so maybe it doesn't work...
@clorox16763 жыл бұрын
@@somegraythings Thanks for your reply. That was a good idea from you, on the other hand always keep in mind we, ordinary people, are certainly more stupid than what designers think the average user is. If you ever wonder "will people get this? about something on your project" be 100% sure we won't get it. I think a more user friendly approach for that would be the thermometer also calculating the approx. distance to target (which I think it should be pretty simpe as the IR beam has to bounce back to it anyways) and flash the screen to let you know you have to step back, not getting the temp on the screen until you're far enough. But, yeah, trying to integrate that to the shape itself instead of relying on the electrionics is pretty thoughtful.
