A small but important element of the service that I forgot to include in the video is oiling the rotary hook. This is the casing that the spool and spool holder fits into. The hook spins round the casing, catching the top thread as it goes to form the stitch. Every now and then add a tiny drop of oil under the hook to keep it lubricated. Add the oil to the inner casing part in the gap just in front of the two wings of the hook. drive.google.com/file/d/1v8kv9OOCMctoA3W7n4oQcGmbv0YeWyoZ/view?usp=sharing

This video was extremely helpful! I just inherited a brother DB2 b735 from my grandmother, and it could use a clean! My only problem right now is trying to unscrew the needle plate because it is screwed on tight.
@WindmillCurtainRoom3 жыл бұрын
Oh I'm so glad the video helped you but yes, those needle plates can be a bugger to get off sometimes. The screw slots often get gnarled up and damaged so the screwdriver slips, which just makes things worse, and getting a straight angle is also difficult. I would suggest giving the screw slots a really good clean first and find a good sharp screw driver that's not too small that it slips in the slot. Dribble a bit of pentrating oil on each screw and let them sit overnight before trying again. Lean all you weight on to the screwdriver and keep it as straight as possible. Good luck 🤞🍀

@WindmillCurtainRoom Жыл бұрын
Hi Julie, I'm glad you found the video useful....10 years!? I'd say it definitely deserves an oil change. As for the motor, really they either work or they don't but the thing that can wear them out quicker is overheating caused by being c logged up with fluff and dust, so I'd recommend taking the cover off the end of the motor and giving it a good clean out inside either with a brush or the vacuum nozzle. You can also add a drop of machine oil to the pulley wheel to keep things running smoothly. Have fun 👍

@Windmill Curtain Room thanks for your reply my machine doesn't have the oil at the bottom like yours but has the holes marked in red to put oil in so I've always put oil in them once a month. Will give the motor a look at and hoover thanks for the tip.

@WindmillCurtainRoom2 жыл бұрын
Hi Eileen, thanks for your lovely comment. I can't remember where I got my smaller pulley from originally but it would have been from one of the machine parts suppliers like AE Sewing I would think. If only intend to quilt occasionally a much easier way is to just wedge something under the foot peddle so your machine only goes so fast. I use a couple ofv small old fabric pattern books that i can adjust easily. I know other people use bricks wrapped in interlining or blocks of demse foam. A Yoga brick is ideal. Just make sure you find a way to stop it from slipping around.

Hi, thanks for a super useful video. Would you be able to provide some much needed help? I can’t find the information anywhere on-line and can’t get anyone to come out to service my mum’s Brother DB2-B755-3 industrial sewing machine. It hasn’t been used for many years so the oil needs to be changed. Having watched your excellent demo I’m happy to go ahead and do this myself :) Can you help with something else? The machine should have two wicks that dangle into the oil pan but the one at the top of the machine (once you’ve tilted it back) seems to have broken off. I would be very grateful if you could advise how to go about changing it. There are a lot of screws and it’s all rather bewildering! Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Additionally, when turned ON, the motor runs ok but when I press the pedal further (to speed up the sewing rate) it stops and then re-starts by itself. This keeps happening every time I try it. I’m hoping this is because the machine hasn’t been lubricated for many years. Your thoughts on this too would be gratefully received. Many thanks!
@WindmillCurtainRoom Жыл бұрын
Hi there, I'm very glad the video has helped you a little, but trying to explain how to remove/replace a wick here is really hard, if not impossible. There are two wicks, one at the front and one at the back of the machine positioned roughly under the needle. Both run up inside tubular structures quite a way, and one even doubles back on itself, so I'd be very reluctant to offer any guidance without a video alongside. I'm currently moving home, so my machine is all packed up and probably won't be back in commission for a few months. I then have some other jobs to complete before starting any new videos I'm afraid so I would recommend you get a sewing machine engineer out to sort the wick and he can most likely diagnose the stop/start issue, too It sounds like a loose connection to me tbh though so it might be worth checking the wiring in the plug at least and maybe where the other end fits into the motor. There's generally just a 2 pin connector there that aren't very good and can easily get damaged. I wouldn't run the machine until you have it properly lubricated as it can damage the mechanism inside. I'm sorry I've not been much help but hopefully you can get your mums machine back in commission. They're really excellent machines that can last decades so it's definitely worth putting a little effort in at this stage. Justine

Hi there. Firstly your video is brill... Thank you...most helpful, but i was wondering what exactly should the "oil window" look like when the machine is running? I have just purchased a second hand (obvs!) brother DB2-B755 and copied your above vid... changed oil etc, and i'm really not sure if the wicks are doing their job?? Cheers Sammie J from Brighton
@WindmillCurtainRoom2 жыл бұрын
Hi Samantha and thank you for your comment. The wicks only supply some of the components with oil and aren't really related to the oil window. The main shaft inside is what is submerged in the oil sump as it turns and flings the oil about. All machines are different but the DB2 doesn't actually show that much oil in the window. If you run the machine at full pelt you should be able to see just a small amount of oil spattering on the inside. As long as you see that there's enough oil 😀👍
@smitbar113 жыл бұрын
I think you should invest in a set of metric combination spanners, they cover most 'bases', just a suggestion :)
@WindmillCurtainRoom3 жыл бұрын
Yes, that would have been the sensible option wouldn't it? My tool kit is woefully lacking when it comes to jobs like this although I do have two sets of spanners amazingly! Despite searching and searching though I could NOT find one to fit that pulley nut so either I have lost one (likely) or my sets didn't have one that big in the first place (also likely) 🤷🏼♀️. This isn't a job I do very often tbh so I struggled on with what I could find 🙄

Amazing video thank you so much. I have successfully serviced my machine. I have the mk2 edition. You're video was super helpful and clear. One thing I noticed on my machine is that one of the bottom wicks need replacing as its brittle and easily damaged. Is this hard to do? Any advice greatly appreciated. Thank you once again. Carly
@WindmillCurtainRoom3 жыл бұрын
Hi Carly, yay I'm glad you managed to do your own service. It's a great way to learn about and get more confident with your machine. If some of the non-brittle bit of the wick still drapes into the oil then you shouldn't need to replace it as it will still be wicking but if only the end dips in and that's gone brittle then it may well be best to replace it. Usually there's just one little screw holding them in place and they're easy to replace but I don't recall ever doing one on a mkII so I could advise with confidence in afraid. Good luck 👍

Excellent video very informative, thanks a lot. I do have a question and maybe you can help. I have this sewing machine upstairs and its very heavy. Is there a way to remove the machine so it can be easily carried back downstairs? thanks
@WindmillCurtainRoom4 жыл бұрын
Hi and thanks for your kind comment. Yes, the machine can be completely removed from the table so you can carry that separately. Lean it back first like I did in the video so that you can slip the belt off the pulley wheel on the right of the machine. Home it back down then get your forearm right under the arm of the machine and lift. It may feel like it won't come away, it's usually just the hinges bedded down a bit too well, just give it a bit of a wiggle and it should come away. The bottom will be dripping with oil so be prepared with an old towel or something to wrap it will you move it. You can set it down temporarily but it'll be resting on its pins so it's not very stable. You'll then be left with the table and the motor which is the really heavy bit but still much easier to move without the machine on top. Good luck 👍

@WindmillCurtainRoom Жыл бұрын
Do you mean the bobbin/spool in the bottom of the machine? If so, then the most common error is to put the spool in so the thread is winding the wrong way. The thread should come be pulling back on itself once it's in the tensioner.

Hi there I’ve just made a purchase of a Brother 755-mkll. I know the machine hasn’t been used for some time so I have followed all the steps in your super helpful video. I have two questions I’m hoping you can help with please? The clutch and motor gets very hot is this normal if not what should I do? I think my machine missing a section of the bobbin winder would you recommend any standalone bobbin winders ? Thanks in advance 🧵🧵
@WindmillCurtainRoom3 жыл бұрын
Oooh the motor shouldn't get that hot. It will get a bit warm but not really hot. Check that the belt isn't too tight, there should be just abut of give in it. Also check that the belt isn't pulling at a steep angle down to the pulley wheel on the motor, it can stand to be a bit off but should be relatively vertical. The motors do get very full of fluff and dust so if you can remove any of the casing (please unplug from the wall first) then get in there with a small paint brush and get as much out as possible. A can of compressed air is also very useful for cleaning machines. You can get that online, often used to clean computers. I'm not sure which bit of the bobbin wonder you mean. Is it the thread stand that the bobbins sit on or a part that should fix to the machine itself?

Once you emptied the oil from underneath of the head, do you have refill underneath the head or it doesn’t need as long as you put some oil on the top where you showed there were a few holes
@WindmillCurtainRoom Жыл бұрын
There should be some wicks that soak up oil from the sump so once you've cleaned out the sump put new oil in and sit the head back down. The wicks will then deliver oil to some parts of the head quite quickly. The rest is dripped into the holes that I show in the top of the head.

@WindmillCurtainRoom3 жыл бұрын
Well it's almost impossible to know what could be causing the problems without seeing the machines in afraid but if it were me I would start by giving both machines a thorough clean and service, then check that they're threaded up correctly, that the correct needles are being used and that they're fitted correctly. Sometimes machines can get out if sync and need to be reset by a service engineer. I hope you get them sorted out.

Hi, I'm gonna change the oil in the brother sewing machine that used to belong to my mum, so that mu daughter can use it for her textiles course. It has not been used much in last 10 years. How much oil do I buy?
@WindmillCurtainRoom4 жыл бұрын
You should look for 'Light Sewing Machine Oil' and it's usually in 1 litre containers. You'll probably use the majority in the sump then have some left that you can use in a little bottle to do all the oil holes in the head of the head of the machine and don't forget to add a couple of drops to the hook as in my comment above.

That loose tension peice on the top of your machine: does my Brother DB2 need that?
@WindmillCurtainRoom2 жыл бұрын
You mean the loose disk tension? Yes it helps to stop the thread whipping around as it pulls off the bobbins. If you don't sew that far it may not be necessary but if you do a lot of long fast stints then it does help.

@WindmillCurtainRoom3 жыл бұрын
Hi Renee, it's been a while since I used a db2 but I recall having to depress the backside lever whilst you turned the stitch length dial. I don't think you depress it all the way, maybe just halfway so hourly it's just that. If you've tried that then I'd have to say it sounds like there may be something broken or loose somewhere. The first thing I'd do would be to check there's nothing broken with the dial. It may be slipping because a screw isn't tight enough. Otherwise it may need a more in depth inspection best done by an engineer. Good luck and let me know how you get on. Jx

@WindmillCurtainRoom4 жыл бұрын
Hi, you just need to lift the head of the machine and tilt it back and the belt will slacken enough for you to remove it and replace it. You'll need to remove some of the metal safety casing first. I show how to do that in the video.

Hi, I've been trying to remove the plate but the screw is not moving, any recommendations? I've sprayed a bit of DW40 to loosen the screw but no joy
@WindmillCurtainRoom8 ай бұрын
Hi there, and thank you for your comment. It can be a real challenge getting those screws out, not least because it's hard to get a screwdriver in the slot completely straight. That also makes it difficult to turn the screw which can often lead to damage of the screw head. I recommend using a long screwdriver making sure it has a good sharp end. Also make sure it's not too small and fits the head of the screw snuggly. WD40 can help but it needs a bit of time to work it's way in so maybe add a little each day and give it time to penetrate then clean the WD40 off before you try again to undo the screw. You could also try putting the screwdriver in place and then hitting the top of it with a hammer. This can both re-establish a good slot for the screwdriver and 'crack' the threads of the screw in the hope that it loosens slightly. I hope this helps. Good luck and let me know how you get on. Justine

Hi there from New Zealand! Just wondering if you have any ideas regarding my machine, which is a Brother DB2 B755 100. The needle does not pick up the thread from the bobbin, so I can't even get started. Are you able to assist please?
@WindmillCurtainRoom2 жыл бұрын
Hello there on the other side of the world 🌎 There are a few reasons why the bobbin thread isn't picking up; 1. The needle is in the wrong way round. There's a slightly scooped out side to the needle that lines up with the hook of the bobbin case. 2. The bobbin is inserted into the bobbin car the wrong way round. The thread should go back on itself to create the correct tension. 3. The tension screw in the bobbin case is too tight so a loop of these isn't developing to be caught by the needle. 4. The upper tension is too tight. 5. The timing is off (this may require an engineer to reset) 6. There's a build up of these and/or lint in the bobbin case pushing the hook and/or spool out of position. 7. The needle is blunt and missing the bobbin thread. I'd start by giving everything a really good clean and checking it's threaded up correctly with the right tension then work through the other potential issues. Good luck
