Many artists get screwed over by labels and advances. The advances are LOANS that are to be repaid by the artist. The artist only makes money after the cost of production, promotion and the advance gets recouped. Labels are basically betting on an artist and if the artist doesn't make all those costs back, they are worse than broke, they are bankrupt.
