If u didnt hear me say it a million times in the video, idrc for the term industry plant in the general sense. For better or for worse, this is usually how the music industry operates, so imo we should retire the term and instead just support independent artists! No, every fake artist with fake numbers must be added to the list. It's OK to like their music, calm down. Just realize they are not authentic and exist on industry's mercy. Gimme a break y'all, a good song is a good song, and good artists come in a lot of shapes and sizes. Whitney Houston didn't sing her own songs. Great pop is often the result of a lot of hands and makers, it's not just some kid writing songs in their bedroom. Fitting definition for Industry Plant: someone the corporate music industry grabs, turns into a specific character, for the sole aspect of making said label money. A "fake" artist. By that definition, there are lots of very shady people in a position of being called an "artist" when in reality they are just a bot for the label. Came outta nowhere and suddenly massive. 🤷‍♂️

I always found a lot of artist back stories suspicious. They'll claim how they did it all themselves and were so poor they couldn't even afford food yet somehow put out studio quality records before they even have a career. Having done some production and worked with studios a bit I can tell you that is very expensive to have the equipment and the know how to make any track polished. Usually at most an "organic" come up is from someone who had the tools or connects to record or were doing live shows and got enough buzz for a label to sign them. And that's ok to have needed help from those who have the resources to help you, I don't know why we need to pretend that it's not a necessity of the industry. You can still be great and used it, some of the biggest artists were open about it; Biggie had Diddy, Eminem had Dr Dre, etc.

imo, its weird how people will make being an industry plant seem like its a lot more worse than what it actually it is. e.g like clairo, she just happened to have connections to the music industry through one of her family members and used that to her advantage, plus she was talented too and appealed to a lot of people. people be making it seem worse than it actually is, if an opportunity which enabled you to get to where you wanted to get to quicker in life (if it was a career you were passionate about) got presented to you, wouldn't you take that opportunity? i kinda compare this to e.g your mom or dad knowing people in the healthcare industry that could get you a job in that industry a lot more quicker. a bag is a bag, we all gotta sustain an income, and also, artists like jumex had the same treatment and completley flopped and became irrelevant. so it rly isn't just the industry, its also about the artist (their music, brand, image, likability etc...)

Awesome video matty! I agree that the term "Industry plant" is a little too broad to hold weight. I think the correct definition of IP is someone who has little or no latent talent being picked up by a label and then "made" into a revenue generator. Like all the Lil Pump clones who for the most part are just kids who are told to dye their hair, get some face tats and some wasted designer thrown on them to generate clicks and spotify listens. If the talent is there, you can't truly be considered an IP, you were just given the connections that you needed!

For me, it rarely matters what a musician came from, what they do, or who they are. Art doesn't need to be representative of the person generating it to be relatable or enjoyable. Especially in terms of music, writing is predominately fictional and plenty enjoyable even if that individual didn't live that or do it. Sure, it sucks that some really brilliant artists don't get the opportunities that they deserve. That doesn't devalue the music created by those who did.

I think that most of the time calling people "industry plants" is pretty stupid unless they have no talent. For basically any industry/job, people leverage their connections to get ahead. Sure, it's not fair to everyone else, but using your family/friend connections in the job world is incredibly common, not just in the music industry. It's interesting to me to watch the evolution of music and what angers people, I'm in my late 30s, as a kid/teen "selling out" was the worst thing you could do, allow your music to be used commercially but I'd never even HEARD of an industry plant, that just how the industry worked, they find someone with talent, then promote them. Now the concept of selling out is completely gone and people are obsessed with industry plants. Very rarely does a completely unknown unsigned artist just blow up, and if they do a label signs them then they become "an industry plant" so basically like you said by this stupid idea almost everyone is

I really think there needs to be a distinction between industry plants and people who just have a lot of connections. Industry plants have their entire image cultivated by their label in order to appeal to a certain demographic, like the tramp stamps for example.

I think that being an industry plant doesn't really involve you having friends who have a connection to music or some big company liking your music before it goes viral. I would say that being an industry plant is being born in a family with connections in music. a good example would be taylor swift

im learning that 10k just floats industry plants. but also what ive already learned is its okay to use your connections to expand your career, thats kind of how it works. everyone thinks that its easy, until they do it, and see how much it actually sucks to be an artist (until it works out, or you change perspective)

Honestly my problem with the term "industry plant" is that it kind of covers everyone. The type of artist who came from the ground up and worked their way into stardom doesn't rlly exist. At least not frequently enough where there should be a name for their opposite. Literally almost every famous person you know is famous because one of their relatives or family friends is. It's not that they're all untalented or that they don't work hard at all either, a lot of these people haul ass cause there are still a lot of famous people that they have to compete with, but like to compete you have to be in the same room, and to be in the same room, you have to know the address for the building 😭

Honesty, a lot of these artists have talent and worked hard. Someone in the industry came across them and helped with resources. Trend data is available and seen everywhere. Going viral takes followers, likes, plays, shows, and views. No one's an industry plant. They planted their own seed and their leafs sprouted with a mix of influences.

I was telling my bro the other day... pretty much all artists are industry plants or nepo babies at this point. Every now and then, someone legit trickles through. But it's important not to be bitter about it, tbh. Because the public is absolutely ruthless towards the ones with no real talent and drive. And some of them are really quite unique and talented and insightful in spite of where they came from. Yum! Foods owns every restaurant. Mars and Johnson and Johnson own all household consumables. Everything is a monopoly now. You just have to take what resonates, and leave the rest Bc there are some gems out there anyway

Not the same ... The labels have made it so that people don't feel like they can make it without them or or they cant be independent artists and thrive. the rise of this trend, and the meme culture...where unless there's a tiktok dance associated to your song you don't go viral.... is just a way to diminish individuality and strip away rights, money, effort from naturally talented artists.

I agree with you about the term ‘industry plant." I don’t think it is very useful, and I honestly find it to be very confusing because it’s hard to know what is and isn’t organic within the music industry. There are so many musicians that, from the outside looking in, it looks like they just blew up out of nowhere, but there’s more to the story than what people see and hear. Even though from the outside looking in it looks like they just blew up out of nowhere, there’s more to the story than what people see and hear from the media and other sources, so I feel like every successful and new to the limelight musician must be an industry plant if that’s the case. I love that you asked viewers to stop talking so confidently about Ice Spice being an industry plant because you are very right about the fact that they could be wrong and they don’t truly have much evidence to back up those claims, so they can’t really know for sure exactly what they’re talking about. Also, it’s Pink Pantheress; it’s pronounced with an -ess at the end of the word Panther. It’s kind of like how the words ‘duchess’, ‘baroness," and ‘essence’ all have an exaggeration on the -ess part.

Is what it is, kids don’t care anymore. They enjoy their pop idols and there’s nothing wrong with it. The industry is getting younger and younger, of course there all plants. I don’t believe at 25, these 16-18 year old kids are so uniquely talented within their own right to have the entire package at that age. Their having to raise their hand to piss and I’m supposed to believe the person singing/rapping about “heartbreak”, their “come up” (what come up from algebra 1 to pre calculus) idk is able to go to school, hangout with friends family, make the music make it well, have the image, make the connections cultivate the consistent success without outside input. Some most definitely could; not the majority that are just popping up left and right with full albums with features by 17-18
