Ah well, this had to happen sooner or later. One must live with his time, I suppose... I'll just go off for a drive while I still can. To anyone reading this in 2121: yes, we drove cars ourselves. They drank petrol (C7H16), made wonderful noises, and made some people truly happy. I appreciate the efforts of all those involved in this project however. Such technical prowess is just mind-boggling. I simply wish that all this technology didn't have to be forced upon those who don't want it, at some point. A few years to go then, before we all get carted around in soulless tin cans. "sigh"...

Not in my lifetime!! I'll never own a hybrid or an autonomous vehicle and they can have my cars when they pry my cold dead hands off the wheel!!! I don't even own anything made after 89 now, my 89 F250 pickup is the only fuel injected vehicle I own and that was because I inherited it from a neighbor.

I still think we’re about 20-25 years away from autonomous vehicles taking over the roads, hopefully longer. They’re still getting in accidents and running people over during testing, no way are they even near ready. Now EV taking over the roads? That’s not too far away, sadly.

@@bap7929 I must agree. Competitions like this one will certainly push the boundaries of current technological limitations. Other problems will arise however, like the transition period in between driven and autonomous vehicles. Also generating the technical background, servers and whatnot, is going to be a hell of a sack of knots. Imagine the required computing power needed to manage all of these driverless machines... I am not certain we will see them take over, but our children might.

I can only hope that there will still be a racetrack. Unfortunately, big racetracks are already disappearing, and on top of that, new eligible drivers don't want to drive, and don't like cars. When everything is autonomous, then who would want any competition between each other, if no human can surpass autonomous driving? It would just be a chore. Glad I won't have to see racing die in my own lifetime.

Did Firestone test the tires that shredded themselves a couple decades ago on your track?

How many of these groups include Tesla and the other major car manufacturers who are building autonomous vehicles? if they're not involved, this is nothing more than a grand college experiment. also, a track full of autonomous vehicles is a far cry from a super busy metropolis with a mixture of autonomous vehicles and vehicles driven by people. it will be interesting to see how well these innovations will work towards getting cars that will be able to anticipate people.

I believe a few DARPA researchers are also involved or so I read. I wonder how much federal grant money has been funneled into it? I'll have to look at that and have a good laugh at our so called budget concerns. I'm sure the millions spent on testing the consistency of ketchup are still being enjoyed by someone somewhere.

Why not just run full size R/C cars? If they can do it with drones and have such accuracy, a race car should be childsplay.

@Iamyou iamyou Between Tesla's collision avoidance system and LDW, FLR installed in most newer vehicles it wouldn't be much of a stretch. Combined with self learning tech used in the AI field it'd be a piece of cake.

@Iamyou iamyou I'm sure it could be reverse engineered outside the US in a reasonable amount of time. And what's auto racing without accidents? It's admittedly why most people go to see them.

@Iamyou iamyou And your opinion is supposed to mean something to me? It's not my fault your superior intellect can't grasp the concept. What's that ingenious device you wasted time coming up with on your page? LMFAO. Some sort of garbage valve, lol!!
