Trans actor and model Indya Moore, star of the FX show "Pose," gave a powerful speech at a protest in New York on June 10 demanding justice for trans women, especially trans women of color. The rally was in response to the death of Layleen Polanco, who was found dead in her jail cell at Rikers Island.

I always struggle to quantify what a chilling effect being trans must be in its self. How much you might go out of your way to avoid potential threats to your person must surely be meaningful when looking at murder rates. I’ve seen some attempts at delegitimization towards trans rights focusing on being murdered. which is the deception of statistics, a low rate of murder does not suggest a lower risk of murder objectively. I think the trans murder rate suggests a population all too aware, even hyper vigilant in an effort to survive. It is courageous to be who you are despite the consequences. We should all be more aware of the lovely human beings who might not fit a societal image of heroics...being hero/heroines nonetheless! Maybe not seeing it themselves...as the fight against fear is deep inside. those who would end life, often do so as the final proof of their own cowardice. and we are merely their accomplices when not fighting against those same forces that would cutoff humanity. It is never too late to offer up the best of you, having had enough of mistakes. we might find happiness for generations to come, a little sacrifice to add our self to the voices which refuse to be trampled by the most of us. . No more “mistakes” we all allow, be it cruelty within sight or our own bigotry, humanity is worth so much more than anyone of us could possibly know. Why be passive? when we could instead stride beyond the awestruck confusion where fear would make us pause. Many would wish it otherwise, but they are griefs incarnate abusing the ability to teach. Teachers of pain who consume their own despised lies. Maybe their next generation will be different if in our differences we reach out.
