Is it the visuals alone or do you have other concerns? I covered auto racing for more than 25 years as a photographer and photographed many hundreds of crashes, so I have learned to see many details before and as the accidents happen and to see even more when reviewing still and video footage afterwards. It is interesting that Wilson's car never changed it's line until after safely getting past Karam's car, then Wilson's car makes a gradual left turn as the brakes are applied hard (note the skid marks and the smoking tires although the car is not sliding sideways.) His head does not drop forward until after he passes Karam's car. It appears he remained aware and functioning at least until just before he hit the inside wall. Even after being hit in the head, he may have been able to avoid hitting Karam or another car.

Ayrton Senna= Head injury Dan Wheldon=Head injury Jules Bianchi=Head injury Justin Wilson=Head injury Henry Surtees=Head injury So .... who is next ? I think its time for closed cockpits ...
@almostfm9 жыл бұрын
+MikeDjfr4sh The problem is that closed cockpits provide their own problems. If a car gets upside down, the driver can't get out (and can't be pulled out without first flipping the car back onto it's wheels. In the event of a fire, it's going to take additional time to get the cockpit off and the driver out. I'm not saying it definitely can't work, but we're at the point with car design that just about any added safety features have tradeoffs that have to be weighed. Remember that the part that Wilson hit was put on the car as a safety measure to protect a driver's feet and legs.

There has been great resistance from many F1 fans with regard to cockpit protection. I can't fathom why. The halo being introduced to F1 for 2018 doesn't affect the viewers' experience one bit, but it can make all the difference in the world to a driver. To put it a different way, hopefully one that will make anti-Halo F1 fans get a better perspective on the implementation of the Halo. If Justin's car had been equipped with effective cockpit protection, he would not have died as a result of the impact with the debris. And if you think that a piece of carbon fibre can't hurt you, then I challenge you to pop on a helmet and have a chunk launched at your head. The form over function crowd should start thinking.

R.I.P. Justin.

I was at this race. I'll never forget that image of the medical helicopter leaving the track after the accident. When we saw it take Justin to Allentown Hospital (which is 40 miles from the track), immediately there was this terrible, unsettling quiet at the track right there and then- when a medical helicopter leaves the track after an accident, that's when you know it's bad. When that helicopter took off, I'm sure a few people were making some noise- I just don't remember hearing anything when I was watching it leave. I do also remember my stomach tightening when the helicopter left; I guess I was too shocked and unsettled to notice any noise when I saw it leave. RIP Justin- gone way too soon. I'm not sure IndyCar belongs on ovals longer than 1.5 miles (other than Indianapolis, obviously) anymore- even though this was a freak accident, Wickens's accident 3 years later there was proof that Pocono- which has had a history of poor safety was just too dangerous for IndyCar. Pocono, Fontana, Michigan- even with these wing flaps that prevent the cars from flipping over, IndyCars just go too fast at those tracks. At this race, the fastest lap average was 219 mph- even if these cars aren't as fast as the CART cars were in a straight line (at Fontana in 2000, Gil de Ferran averaged 240 mph during qualifying) that's still really f***ing fast.

Wilson's death and Wickens paralyzing injuries are the reasons why Indy Car no longer runs at Pocono

Was it a plain head injury, broken neck, or a combination of both that killed poor Justin? It looks like the car is still pretty much in control until it started to head toward the wall. Did he lose consciousness then, and the impact with the wall did him in, or was it the piece of debris? I don't mean to offend anyone. I'm just curious.

Head Trauma. More likely the piece of debris, due to the weight and size of an object, along with how fast Wilson was going. At that point Wilson is probably going 180-190 slowing down for the caution. I mean look how much damage a spring did to Massa or a piece of random debris did to Hinchcliffe. He was already unconscious, but the impact with the wall did him no favors.

Honestly it looks like more of these drivers die from debris contacting their head than the actual crashes. It’s unbelievable to survive a hard hit and die from debris.

The sound of the impact after the crash was haunting.

And now we have people bitching about the Aeroscreen... They should review this video.

As sad as it is unfortunate. All thoughts and prayers with the victims of this tragedy. Very sad.
