For British fans there’s a real sense of optimism building down at the Port Vell in Barcelona with INEOS Britannia launching their new AC75 for the first time and getting the initial tow-test period and sail-fitting procedure underway on a very long day for the sailors and support team. In the water by 10.15am with the mast up and a swarm of technicians and sailors working diligently through the systems checks, INEOS Britannia was a hive of delighted activity throughout the morning, with a sense of anticipation that could almost be bottled.

Rudder foil well aft of the vertical blade, rudder foil curves and anhedral consistent with design for download, rudder canted all the way forwards for tow when the tow force is much lower than sail centre of effort and therefore less bow down moment. Looks like mozzie might be on to something

With race cars you are trying to prevent air flowing under the vehicle from ahead to behind. In foiling sailboats you're trying to prevent it from windward side to leeward side. It's not clear to me they've entirely adjusted to this crucial difference.

Never mind the boat, let’s discuss the sailing team. How have they gone in the one design foiling classes? 😬 The designs will converge this cup, it’s all down to the way the team first develops the boat then races it.

We don't have any context as to what they were trying to achieve. They're not towing out prior to a test sail, they said that was not on the agenda due to conditions. They are probably starting by testing the control systems and structures under tow, which would require applying input values across the whole range. If so, they may have had the rudder kicked forward during the brief period of the clip, whereas you seem to assume they would be at all times trying to trim for optimum flight.

A lot of what Mozzy sails were speculating becomes apparent in this tow test - bow down skeg design and that rudder is definitely doing something different…
@johnandrews2853
@johnandrews2853 Ай бұрын
Something else for Mozzy and others to speculate about - at the end, after the sail is up - the boom seems to have shrouding wide enough for a technician to work inside. Are INEOS just hiding how the main sheet works, or is that 'tent' from 'boom' to deck going to be deployed in sailing? Its very odd how wide it is!

The Italian boat looks the best That Kiwi boat probably has the most interesting technology under the hood The Swiss boat has the most radical whole shape That British butt looks pretty unconventional like it did in the last cup cycle I feel like it’s a white elephant The American boat hasn’t launched yet, but I am assuming it’s gonna look pretty conservative And the French could go either way, but they both probably won’t be super fast

Well, that may be the intent. If you look closely at the other teams they all seem to fly with their bows low. It's not exclusive to INEOS but the Brits may have designed their boat to fly nose down by default.

Sure looks ugly - and ugly is rarely fast. Britain has been trying radical designs for 170 years with no success. Let's hope they know something the others don't or we're heading for our 38th consecutive defeat. It doesn't calm the nerves to know that NZ went for an incremental design and it's looking great on the water....

@@dulls8475 No - I'm a Brit who has been following our AC campaigns for 60 years - so I've earned the right to be cynical. We keep coming up with radical designs that don't work - and we did this yet again last time around with pretty woeful results. Meanwhile the Kiwis have an evolutionary design and it looks solid. Luna Rossa too. As I say, I hope the Britannia team know something the others don't but experience has taught me not to get my hopes up.
