Inertial collapse of a single bubble near a solid surface
Shahaboddin Alahyari Beig, University of Michigan

DOI: doi.org/10.1103/APS.DFD.2018....
Cavitation research is essential to a variety of applications ranging from naval hydrodynamics to medicine and energy sciences. Sub-micron-sized cavities can grow to millimeter-sized bubbles, and collapse violently in an inertial fashion. This implosion, which concentrates energy into a small volume, can produce high pressures and temperatures, generate strong shock waves, and even emit visible light. In the vicinity of a neighboring solid the collapse becomes non-spherical, evidenced by the formation of a liquid re-entrant jet directed toward the solid. The impact of the jet upon the distal side of the bubble generates a water-hammer shock, and thus high pressure regions along the solid wall. One of the main consequences of cavitation is structural damage to neighboring objects due to bubble collapse. In this video, we simulate the collapse of a single bubble near a solid surface. We show the detailed dynamics of the flow including jet formation and shockwave propagation. Furthermore, we present scaling plots for important collapse properties (e.g., jet velocity, wall pressures) in terms of the initial stand-off distance and driving pressure, which not only illustrate universality of single bubble dynamics but also provide means to predict these phenomena.

Came here looking for a soothing bubble sound, but instead got soothing music and a fascinating explanation on I believe bubbles that intrigue me to learn more about science/physics, etc. Thank you 🙏

It looks like a bullet hitting something at one point. I've heard a different elements (and possibly undiscovered elements) can be made from the reactions with the 'damaged' surface. I think this can explain the unique, individualized smell to cavitation based failures in automotive applications. Essentially anything has a rather predictable smell except these failures.

Haven't seen racing boats with 3 blade propellers. Often when 2 blade props fail, severe damage or total destruction occures due to extreme RPM, and imbalance. Wouldn't 3 blades be a better solution?

Just noticed the collapsing shape takes form of a mussel and even further shows its development. I just realized that the constant being at play creates a cavity or growth spot for these creatures. Most namebrand adhesives gives thanks to this organism .

Thats 2 d. Its a 3 dimensional dimpled spheroid collapsing into a 2 torus around a logarithmic spiral of a cyclone anti cyclone jet of immense pressure and temperatures at the barycentre. See Stan Tenens Meru foundation for an elegant model and some astounding facts that are jaw dropping in their implications.

Shahab Alahyari Beig This is very impressive work! Just an additional question. Which format do you export in Paraview to be imported in Blender?
@shahabalahyaribeig7538

The code outputs in HDF5. ParaView reads in xdmf files associated with the HDF5 output files, and does the first phase of post processing (e.g., creating iso surfaces, ...), and outputs in x3d which are then read in Blender.

A nice piece of Fluid Dynamics Calculation, top of the bill, I assume. According Burt Rutan there are 2 ways to solve a problem: 1. Avoid the problem (Burts preferred method) 2. Tackle the problem and try to solve it. (Most aviation manufacturers method, not allways succesful) The propeller showed , as I interpret it, vortex induced cavitation. Method 1. So.... if I look to the geometry of the propeller blade and use a sort of recessed outer diameter, (reduce radius over azimut angle), something like a high Mach number wingtip, the zone of cavitation lies outside of the blade-area? The bubbels will implode not near the metal surface. More blades must be used due the lesser surface, efficiency will be lower. Method 2. Use a more resilient, fatigue resistant alloy. Expensive to develop.
