Marcus Garvey speaking at Madison Square Garden in 1920 was a monumental moment in Black history! The place was PACKED with around 25,000 people, all there to support his vision of Black pride, economic independence, and pan-Africanism. People came from across the U.S., the Caribbean, Africa, and beyond, showing how massive the Universal Negro Improvement Association (UNIA) movement was. At its peak, the UNIA had between 2 to 6 million members worldwide, making it one of the largest global movements for Black empowerment ever. The Garden was filled to capacity, with overflow crowds outside! Garvey’s powerful words, ‘Up, you mighty race, accomplish what you will,’ still resonate today. The energy and passion in that room were unmatched. Truly a powerful moment for Black empowerment!

@nyabinghinyabinghirealms9433 Evidence is clearly in favor of Marcus Garvey, not Bob Marley. This is not about being perfect, Mr Garvey laid down the foundation, the blueprint in order for your community to uplift itself out of the low reality it is in. Smoking weed will keep it there along with this toxic culture funded by Man.

While I have great respect for Garvey as a Historical figure, I also have some ambivalence that I still feel he needs some Interrogation and Critique. I feel Garvey didnt quite Understand the Breadth and Depth of American Racism / Whyte Supremacy.----how duplicitous, perverse and contradictory it can be. Of course, we looking back in hindsight and didnt have the Language and Psychology to articulate what Whyte Sxpremxcy was all about. I wonder what Garvey would have felt about the Rise of Obama and Kamala Harris in our political midst. Would he have embraced this Proxy Indo Caribbean woman as "Black" as she upholds the Dominant system. How would Garvey feel about the myriad Continental and Caribbean Black immigrants who have come to North America only to embrace ultra conservative Republican / Whyte hegemonic politics while negating our ADOS lineage Reparations Justice Claims. Garvey really should have stayed in the Caribbean in establishing himself, sorting out the differences and contradictions of sundry African histories and identities----Before making the quantum leap to the USA
@j.w.2391Ай бұрын
Ironically, Continentals arent ideologically "invested" in Garveyism or Pan-Africanism...this is the paradox...we want to See and Embrace them in Fellowship---but do they embrace Diaspora Africans...?
@grunggadx25Ай бұрын
Actually he understood it more than you think hence why he implemented the economic and industrial program and a security wing if you don’t know Garvey don’t speak and go read
@richiedread123Ай бұрын
I disagree, I believe Garvey fully understood what he was up against. Garvey I don't think was about making America comfortable for black people. He was about moving black people back to Africa. He even cut deals with the KKK to leave black people alone. Garvey once stated: I regard the Klan, the Anglo-Saxon clubs and White American societies, as far as the Negro is concerned, as better friends of the race than all other groups of hypocritical whites put together. These other groups didn't want black people to leave. Our free labour is what built the USA and without the cheap black labour that project would surely fail. Garvey understood that, and so they had to get rid of him. W.E.B Dubois and company assisted in that effort and yet he had to flee the US himself when they reality that Garvey railed against hit him squarely in the face.
@rw9833Ай бұрын
I wish Booker T Washington didn't invite him and he had stayed in Jamaica. Jamaica would have a two prong attack between Leonard Howell who started Rastafarian (grassroot effect) and Marcus Garvey who would go after the political system. Both men had sufficient experience in their travels throughout the Carribean, Central and South America. He did not need to be drawn into the American quagmire. I felt is youth was wasted in a foreign land and he did not have sufficient impact in the land of his birth.
@celticmulato2609Ай бұрын
When Garvery came to America, it was the Democrats who were the racist party and who made Jim Crow rules, KKK, not the the Republicans!
