@Brent03315 жыл бұрын
Yup, I think this particular report has morphed in recent years (Depending on the service/unit) due to the nature of the GWOT and fighting an insurgency rather then an opposing military. All the same shit, I'm sure it will go back to SALUTE for you guys as we transition back to preparing to fight a near peer threat in the future.
@WW5RM5 жыл бұрын
U can be critical and or highly valuable INTEL! I believe we used Uniform. Unit is great but many times one is unable to determine that so Uniform can cover the basics. Thus letting higher intelligence determine that. Over time putting all the U pieces together they can establish a Units tactics and movements. But if you can positively ID Unit patches that is a huge plus!
@comfycouchreviews5 жыл бұрын
I really appreciate the effort put into these videos especially the live action stuff showing examples. Things as simple as you sitting in an LPOP with binos that are "cat-eyed" is a great detail that young guys can see and add to a mental pre patrol checklists. For new small unit leaders it seems like the simple things are overlooked due to them being overwhelmed with the planning process itself
@GooninRaccoonin Жыл бұрын
What my unit did, is for deliberate recon patrols or leaders recon we would use SALUTE, but if it's a hasty recon like we just so happen to spot enemies we didnt intend on seeing during a movement and they havent seen us yet we would use SALT

For a civilian with no prior training I was able to get a mostly accurate report on the scenarios except for the locations and the bolt action which I thought was a machine-gun and the pistol which I missed completely. I do not know how you come up with the location. No excuses though, an inaccurate report is still inaccurate even if you got most of it right.
@Brent03315 жыл бұрын
Awesome brother, reference a military map reading video here on KZbin. I know there a few decent ones out there that will help you out. I may make a land nav video in the future, I just know its going to be a big project so I'm going to put it off until I have a lot of time on my hands.
@superbroadcaster4 жыл бұрын
A lot of new trainees still can't figure out the location system, although it's not that big a deal for civilians. Military coordinates aren't usually used outside of the military unless you're in some pretty high speed civilian companies.

Good stuff. We never transmitted our grid coordinates. If your communications are being monitored then you might be inviting an artillery strike. Our units used a custom map overlay. Specific points on our maps were designated with a separate letter designations. A point on the map might be AE or BZ. We would then say our location based on distance from those designated points. I am from AE 2.5 right and 3 up. That would be 2.5 kilometers right and 3 kilometers up from AE. These were changed every so often so a captured map would not lead to enemy interception of our coordinates. These were separate from Target Reference Points. In addition just because higher headquarters designated Target Reference Points, it does not mean that at the squad and platoon level you can not develop your own if they make sense. An example a Battalion level TRP is at a major road intersection. Your squad is several kilometers from that TRP and there are several smaller road intersections in your area. At the squad level you can designate these as Squad or Platoon TRP. Give the LT or Squad Ldr the grid coordinates to those positions. When individual soldiers are calling back from the Observation point they can use the squad TRP number so they do not have to guess or miss communicate the grid coordinate. I have 10 enemy soldiers at Platoon TRP 1. The LT would then send the SALUTE report higher substituting the Grid coordinate for the squad TRP number. Saves time and increases accuracy.

Thanks, this has come up again due to his current gear contest. Many guys gave their location at the beginning of the salute, I chose not to. 1. I don't train with encrypted radios 2. Higher should already know where I am 3. I don't need indirect fire on me while I'm still on the horn.

This is a education video good for all rookie soldiers, highly recommended👍 While i was a rookie in 80s, the british style sight report would be AT AT WHAT WHAT WHAT AT what time AT what location WHAT kind of a person/unit WHAT are they doing WHAT are you doing This type of sight reports had to be transmitted by BATCO, cause in those days encrypted radio are not excist. All i want to say is, although time change, equipment change, standard change, unit not equivalent, you can compare the general idea, it is almost the same. All rookies no matter you are army, navy, or even air force, this is the basics of of the basics. As important as you handling your rifle.

A “Nothing to report” actually means something behind, although it sounds stupid to report that, it isn't 1 you tell your hq your op position still functioning. I.e. you are still alive 2 nobody report doesn't mean nobody pass the location, your nothing report is an eyeball check 3 a skilled hq radio operator can use your voice to determine whether that's a normal operator or a questionable one, there is something call “authentication”, but that's another chapter I though it was a common sense that all army must teach their rookies? Turn out it may not be the case....
