Having a form of thermos on your kit in colder climates is quite useful. During breaks you can boil water and store it in a thermos for use later, either for making tea, food or just regaining body heat by drinking it straight. Having a warm cofee ready to drink when it is 1° celsius outside and raining is an immense morale boost. You can also tranfer some of the hot water to a nalgene and take it with you in your sleeping bag, warming the bad up faster inside.

Even two large plastic bottles (check cap to be closed tight)) with hot water putted in your sleeping bag, one at feets one closer to torso, allow you to sleep warm and comfortably while its like -5..-10..-20 Celsius outside

Nice warm weather setup. Love the way you spread your knowledge to others. If you return with a cold weather perspective this are my personal experiences, add as you please. A thermos or two are mandatory. Units can’t boil/melt water all the time so a way to keep water in between is mandatory. Don’t completely fill containers as that might destroy them if frozen. Will be a pain to melt but still better then a ruined bottle. Store inside bag isolated with clothes etc. In deep snow water is everywhere but in frozen form. Melting snow takes time but if you do it completely refill all your containers (including yourself!). Mission and thermal threat might make this a non option though. It takes way less fuel to boil water then to first melt it from snow. If possible, try to find water in liquid form under the snow/ice first. Isolate your hole and it won’t be needed to drill/dig out again. When it’s cold the body dehydrates quickly, especially below -15C/5F. Water leaves the body with every breath. Filters, especially ceramic ones breaks below freezing. If small pores are wet and allows to freeze they’ll frost blast and make the filter bigger particles through. Can be hard to tell ruined from working ones. I personally never bring filters when freezing temperatures are a risk. A quality plastic bottle, preferably in a shape of a canteen, can be a helpful heat source in any sleeping bag. If not quality it’ll leak and you’re in a new and interesting situation.

Yeah cold environments are the only time I can see a thermos making sense, but the stuff I talked about in the video was more geared to a fair/ warm climate.

If you don't care about losing the "body shape" of the canteens Nalgene makes 1 liter bottles with a narrow mouth that fit the black canteen caps. I've been rocking that setup for the last 6 or 7 years. It works well.

Really do love those 2qt canteens. I've several of them. I have an AquaFlask but wouldn't necessarily go out into the field... Like you stated its a bit heavy. Now sitting in my truck w/a hot liquid after skiing ⛷️ all day... I found the wide mouth Nalgene was refreshing and quenching thirst, were as the Camelbak was great when just taking sips to stay hydrated. I'm in the Southwest where either up in the mountains or out in the desert. Most of the free standing water has giardia. So those potassium tabs are a must. I also use the Katadyn Vario filter. It does a great job on giardia. Your specific on people having to "walk" I'm a bit older, so joints, back, and a gut... I don't walk unless I have too. I have pick-up. So I can use systems that are not as weight sensitive. Be that as it may... I still try to maintain light equipment as much as possible. Trucks break down... Really do appreciate your vids. Keep posting!!!

Look to the long distance hiker community. They are exerting themselves over long distances also. How do they store water which is heavy? Multiple smaller containers and filtering/purifying as they go. Keeps weight down, has redundancy (one thing breaking doesn't end their trip ie camelbak), and you can expand or contract how much water you are carrying depending on how close to a water soutce you are. I personally have 1 2qt and 2 1qt on my pack, 2 1qt on my lbv, sawyer squeeze and potable aqua tabs, plus canteen cups and stove with hexamine tabs. I can go from one day to a full week (and have gone that long) in the woods with that setup for water. If I am worried about needing extra, i have a 3 qt camelbak I can bring as well.

Outstanding video, man. Too few guys in the Army give water enough thought in regards of self-sufficiency (another whole topic guys need to start changing mindset on). I knew exactly zero dudes that advocated for carrying water purification tablets nevermind a filter. I'll definitely be changing my own personal SOPs on this, and getting this info out there so maybe more dudes will wise up before its too late. Cheers!

I might consider adding a water key to my kit if operating in a urban environment. You can access hosebibs and faucets that don't have a standard handle. Also it may be a good idea to train the privates to consider the source they are taking water from - meaning it's not unreasonable to suspect intentionally poisoned water holes.

for the most part I use the smartwater 1.5L and 32 oz bottles, I'm not a fan of bladders but will usually carry either a 3L or a 1L on my flak. Bladders must be cleaned regularly or they develop a bacterial slim coating on the inside of them. easy way to slow this down is when they aren't in use to empty them out then stick the bladder into your freezer or fridge. bladders are also susceptible to bursting when you are carrying a full infantry load. Generally I'll take two 32oz Nalgenes and a pathfinder boiling cup. along with one 3L bladder and several smart water bottles, if there is a stream of water available I'll use a cravat to prefilter the water of any twigs or dirt particles, then I'll drop some purification tabs in the bottle wait about 30 minutes and then use a sawyer squeeze water filter which fits perfectly onto a smartwater bottle. tldr: combine the smartwater bottle & cravat + purfication tabs & sawyer squeeze with some pedialyte, liquid iv, drip drop packets and your golden.

AquaMira recommends purifying and then filtering. So basically drop some chlorine drops into a dirty bag, then hook up the filter, and the filter removes the chlorine or at least the taste.

Also check to see what your water tabs take care of and how long they take to do so...not all are created equal. The good ones that kill dang near everything take about 4 hours while the ones most people get take about 30 minutes but dont kill certain things that could easily kill you. So knowing likely contaminants in the water sources you might need to collect from is important.

Interesting thing to point out on comfort: Plate carriers, gear, etc. Its vital to be comfortable so you can operate, but cool water isn't good. Those who don't know will criticize, but the point is trade offs. Cool water requires a trade off of weight, stealth, and in the case of the hydro flasks, adaptability. The vacuum inside a hydro flask makes that metal bottle useless for boiling water since it will rupture in heat. The comfort of a well fitted pack, chest rig, or plate carrier is something that lacks any major trade offs and ultimately serves the end goal of keeping alert and effective. Discomfort every time you move is a major factor, whereas cool water for the first day of a multiday mission isn't worth having less water and capability for an entire op.

@@TheGruntPerspective I'm binging these vids to get a refresher as I shake out my citizen kit. Noticed this point may be seen as inconsistent with earlier vids and wanted to provide context for those who read the comments. The same venom you spit over the cool water is what makes some leaders discount comfort entirely, leading to the issues with plate carriers and such.

When youre in the field, what technique do you use to backflush the sawyer? Do you carry the syringe or does it last for your patrol/the length of trips you do? Also curious if there's any particular reasoning for going aqua tabs over chlorine dioxide like Katadyn Micropurs.
@TheGruntPerspective

Does it make any sense to carry a stainless canteen since you can boil water in it? Then, you can place it back into the water source to cool your purified water, as long as no new water enters your canteen.
