When I went to uni in Australia I packed just my everyday clothes for the current season and the next. I didn't worry about packing any school supplies because you can get that when you get there. If you're talking about the US specifically there are so many places that you can get 'ready-to-go' school kits with like bedding and all that. In particular Target and Walmart. You can also look into shipping things ahead if you know someone who already lives where you're going. You're kind of limited to the airlines' suitcase weight limits.
